    The Inevitable Fate
    Chapter 3
I followed Hilary’s flouncing figure down the refined hallways of the Shire household.
She held a finger to her lips and gently shoved me into her room.
She closed the door firmly and locked it. She turned around and sighed.
“That is the most exciting thing I have ever done in my life.”
I tilted my head and asked, “Really? What do you mean?”
“Well,” she replied, “I am always caged in this house and never
get to do what I really want. I’m not really.. free. This life isn’t all fun, you know.”
I shrugged and said, “I’d rather be a Topworlder than a Beneather though.”
She scratched her arm awkwardly and said, “Well, whatever.
You can use the bathroom over there.” I walked to the door she had pointed to
and she said, “I’m going to watch some TV.” Plopping down on her huge, soft bed,
she took up a remote that was resting on her drawer and turned on the television.
Blinking rapidly, I opened the door and entered into what I recall as Topworld Heaven.
Yeah, I don’t remember much. I just recall fancy showering stuff, clean marble tops,
and bubbles. Lots and lots of bubbles. I was having the time of my life
when I heard an urgent knock on the door, followed by Hilary’s voice,
“Hey, I just saw Lora coming in the house.”
Hastily, I turned off the water and dried myself with a fluffy towel.
    ~ ~ ~
It was night. I gazed longingly at the shining balls of light
in the dark sky. I turned to Beth and nodded good bye.
She nodded and quietly shut the door of the mansion.
I quickly crossed the street and to the door to the Beneath.
I saw some adults and kids there, piling in through the door to their home.
I was the last one to enter, and I made sure to lock the door once I got in.
I slowly marched down the dirt stairway lit with dim torches to the neighborhood.
Once I got out of the stairway, I looked upon the huge field of houses and
stores that I call the Beneath; my home. Walking briskly, I passed a few kids
who were playing with a soccer ball in the light of the small lampposts.
Their parents beckoned them to come inside, and they did, obligingly.
I crossed a dirt path to my house and entered it. It was a one-story house,
which most houses were in the Beneath besides the mayor’s.
My house was filled with a warm light that omitted every shadow.
I found my parents, my little sister, and my older brother at the dinner table.
My brother, Nathan, who was 17 years old, looked at me and teased,
“Hey, Vi, you're late.” My little sister, Rose, who was 9,
added, “Uh-huh, Violet! Where were you? Your hair’s all wet.
It’s not even raining in the Top, is it? What's the weather like?”
Rose loved rain, snow, or shine. She loved to bask in the sun,
jump in rain puddles, or throw snowballs at me and Nathan
whenever she could. I shrugged and said, “It’s a normal day,
with plenty of sunshine,” feeling like a weather news reporter.
Rose smiled and went back to her macaroni and cheese and vegetables.
My mom asked me, “Where have you been?"
My dad added, “Your hair’s wet. Where were you, exactly?”
I replied with exasperation, “I took a shower, what do you think?”
My parents stood up so abruptly that I jumped. Geez, I thought.
Mom said in a restrained voice, “Where did you shower?”
I laughed and replied, “Oh, mom. Dad. So protective.
I showered at the Shires' place."

    The Inevitable Fate
    Chapter 1
“Well, don’t just stand there.” Lora pushes her list to me and says, “Go work!”
I take the list from Lora’s hand and walk out of the room with a sigh.
I step out into the clean, elegant hallway and look at my list.
A small gasp escapes me as I read the horrifyingly long list of work to do.
Just looking at the list made me feel tired already, and I slumped against the wall in defeat.
There were just so many things to dust, to clean, to scrub, to cook, to bake, to sew,
to arrange, to prepare for the party. I scream many curses in my head against Lora.
And so begins my work in the house of a rich Topworlder.
    ~ ~ ~
It has been 3 hours and 30 minutes and half of my list has been crossed out,
miraculously. I dragged myself to the kitchen and was joyful to see that
Lora was not there. I opened the refrigerator, took out an ice-cold water bottle
and drank to my pleasure. My parched throat was relieved and I placed
the now empty bottle in the recycling can.
The Shires were kind enough to let their Beneathers eat or drink anything
from their refrigerator as long it was not of large proportions.
We were also allowed to use bathrooms freely but not use it too long.
We were obviously prohibited from their rooms unless we had business in there.
I sat down and lazily used five minutes to soothe my aching muscles and joints.
I felt like an old robot that was used too much. I cracked my knuckles and
moved my neck around. I stood up and stretched. A yawn came from my mouth
and I smothered it with my hand. My eyes started to tear from the yawn
and I brought up my hand to wipe them away. I heard a delicate voice say,
“Oh, are you alright? What’s wrong?”
My hand fell to my side as I looked up. I thought I recognized that voice.
It was Hilary Shire, the girl who was to turn thirteen this Saturday. The girl
who I am to work my butt off for the remainder of this week.
Still, I can’t be annoyed by her. She’s a generally well-liked girl and is very polite.
She has medium-length, smooth blonde hair and a fair complexion.
I, in opposition, have a light tan and long, sleek brown hair.
Right now it was tied in a very messy bun with a rubber band which
was the only thing I could find to tie my hair.
I smiled calmly and said, “No, I’m fine. It was just a yawn.”
Hilary nodded in relief and said, “You look exhausted.
You can have the rest of the day off, Violet.
You want to take a bath in my bathroom? I’ll cover for you.
You can use anything in there! Except my private under...things.”
I gaped and exclaimed, “For real? And, no, That’s nasty. I won’t touch those.”
Hilary nodded and said, “You can spend 3 and half hours in there,
since it’s the amount of time you have left to work.
I’ll just assign your job to someone else for today.”
I felt guilty about leaving my job to someone else who I was sure
already had enough to do, but I gave in.
“Thank you. Where’s your bathroom? This place is huge.”
She laughed and motioned for me to follow. I did.

    The Inevitable Fate
    Chapter 1
I slowly climbed the stairs to the Topworld. Sunlight poured on me and I took
a breath of real, fresh air. Many Topworlders and Beneathers were mingled
in with each other on the streets, but they barely acknowledged
each others' existences. I carefully closed and locked the door
to my home in the Beneath and went on my way to my masters' home.
I came to the stately, urban home of the wealthy Shires. I knocked twice and Beth opened the door.
Beth, the maid, is one of my Beneather friends.
If you are wondering about her last name, she has none. None of the Beneathers do.
If someone has the same name as another Beneather, they would
just look up the number of one of them. We all have our own numbers.
My full name is Aurora 747444.
    I asked eagerly,
"Heard you're gonna marry!" She nodded and exclaimed,
"Yes! Harry's excited, too. You're gonna be invited of course!"
She playfully smacked my shoulder. I made my way through the huge home
to the kitchen, where my boss, also a Beneather,
awaited me. "Here I am, Lora," I said as I entered.
Lora sat stiffly on a high stool, writing down on paper at the table.
She barely looked at me and replied sharply,
"I am writing your list of chores to do for today. We are going to be extremely busy for the next week."
I squinted and asked, "Why’s that, Lora?" She replied,
"The Shires are having an extravagant party for their daughter, who is turning 13."
Lora is really annoying and irritating. She sits back with "regality",
but she has a pig face and is like, forty. She’s what you call a wannabe Topworlder.
But, no, her family is dirt poor like the rest of us and she has to live in the Beneath.
Because that’s where you live if you aren’t rich.
The Beneath is an underground world. It has a system which brings fresh air
around, which I don’t know of, but it works.
Let me explain the Beneath. There are many entrances to the Beneath.
The one I came out of was the entrance to my neighborhood in the Beneath.
There are artificial lights and everything.
But you never know when you might bump into a mole or a spider or something.
There are railroad tracks underground, too. Our way of transportation in the Beneath is by train.
Mistress Lora sometimes tags along with the Shires on their travels.
Gosh. Anyways, the Beneath is just like the Topworld,
    except it’s way less fancier.
The Topworld is in need of explaining as well, I suppose, so here goes.
The Topworld is for the corrupted government and the rich people on Earth.
Topworlders get high class everything. Beneathers only have 3 days of school
in the week. In class, I learn about these past places called “countries.”
According to textbooks, we live in the “country” that used to be called
“The United States of America.” Not anymore, I guess.
You either live in the Topworld or the Beneath.
The government says the Beneathers owe a debt to the Topworld and it needs to be repaid.
So all the Beneathers from ages 12 to 60 must work for the Topworlders 'til this "debt" is paid for.
A list of rules goes on for each Beneather. The Topworlders have it good.
I wonder what it must be like to be a Topworlder. Must be grand.
