I always told myself I would never
fall for you, no matter how
cute, or nice, or funny you were.
Guess that doesn't matter anymore.
Seeing you there, my heart melts.
Your laugh makes me forget
how immature you are, and makes me remember
that time back when we were friends.
As a little kid, you'd come to my door
and ask, "Wanna come out and play?"
We talked, we laughed, and I never once
thought of how my hair looked
or stopped to fix my make-up,
or wondered if my outfit was cute.
Now, its different. Awkward, almost.
Everything we had has long disappeared:
the ease, the happy laughter, the sparkle in your eyes.
That used to be my sparkle, the one seeing me brought.
That's over and done. We've grownup, grown apart.
You even think I hate you. You couldn't be more wrong.
You still bring that sparkle to my eyes, still brighten my day.
I just hide behind my wall of sarcasm and snark
because you literally hold my heart in your hands,
and its only a matter of time before you drop it.
I've read all the books about the girl
who falls in love with the boy next door.
He loves her, and they're happy together.
Then he breaks her heart, and moves on
like nothing even happened, like her world isn't burning.
Like he doesn't know that she'll never get over him,
that no matter what happens, she'll always love him.
I know how it goes, so why do I keep trying?
Why do I keep willingly putting mself through this horrible pain?
Maybe its because I keep hoping that we'll turn out right,
that you won't break my heart, or make me cry.
You could change my life in an instant, and you don't even realize.
Maybe I think we'd be different, that maybe I'll have you
as my prince charming, not as my unrequited love.
