Cowboy s & Angels
Chapter 5
After lunch, I began to stress out about hanging out with Bentley. I was having second thoughts about being so close with another guy. I'd had guy friends in the past, but after the incident three months before I began to shut them out until we stopped talking altogether. The majority of me was saying run away as I always had. But there was still a tiny voice pushing me forward. I heard my sister reminding me that I had come to Oklahoma to get away from all my worries. To start over for the summer. I heard my mom begging me to move on from my troubled past. I sighed and began preparing for my date.
Thirty minutes later, I was dressed in light jeans, a blue tank top that matched my eyes and a pair of brown riding boots I borrowed from Aunt Holly. Since we were going to be outside the whole time, I left my long blonde hair in its natural loose waves and my face remained free of makeup. I breathed deeply trying to calm myself down and left the house before I could talk myself out of going.
Bentley's POV
As soon as I finished talking to Allie, I abandoned my work and went to the barn to get the horses ready for us. I brushed Rusty's coat and set up his saddle, then I moved on to Maggie. I was planning on riding Rusty at first and give Allie a chance to ride again on the calm mare. I quickly realized that wouldn't be possible because Maggie was going to need two new shoes before she could go anywhere. I sat down in the hay and frantically racked my brains for any solution I could think of. I decided my options were either postpone the date or we could both ride Rusty. If it was postponed, I didn't know when she would ever agree to something again, but I didn't think she would want to ride double. I could tell it took a lot for her to agree to this date and I knew before I asked that no matter what she would have her guard up more than ever. The last thing she would want was to get on the same horse as me. I was thinking about how I was going to tell Allie our date was canceled when she walked in looking happier than I had ever seen her. When she was happy she looked calm and innocent and with the blonde hair and blue eyes all she needed was wings and she would be the perfect angel.
"Hey Bentley," she said with a shy smile.
"Hey Allie. Look I have some bad news. Maggie needs new shoes. We can't ride her today." I saw her happy expression falter for a second, but before I could say anything it was back.
Allie's POV
It took me a second to process what he was saying. I was a little distracted by the fact that he was wearing his white t-shirt again and now he had added a tan cowboy hat. It was so stereotypical but so perfect. He looked like he had stepped out of an old western movie. Then his words hit me. The mare couldn't ride. That meant one horse and two people. At first I was terrified. I didn't want to be that close to a boy ever again. But I listened to my mother and sister yet again and forced a smile on my face. There was just something about Bentley that made me trust him. I could do this.
"That's ok. Rusty's strong enough for both of us right?"
"Yeah," he smiled and moved toward Rusty. "He's strong enough."
A few minutes later I was perched in the front of Rusty's saddle and Bentley had his arms around me loosely holding his reins. It was awkward at first but then we began talking about everything and anything. He had a way of making me reveal things about myself that I'd barely ever talked about. The only thing I didn't talk about was Ryan. We rode for hours by a large calm river, past a gorgeous waterfall, through the corn fields, and everywhere else within a two mile radius of the ranch house. It was perfect. At the end of the night, he took me up into the loft of the barn and opened up the door so we could see the sunset. For the first time in a long time I was genuinely happy. I couldn't help it I scooted closer to him and leaned my head on his arm.
"Thank you for everything today Bentley. I had a really good time." He smiled down at me and wrapped his arm around my shoulders.
"I did too Allie. I'm glad I could get to know you."
This brought a smile to my face that lasted long after I climbed down from the loft and went back to the house. I knew then that I wanted to see this cowboy again.
