Jake in the khakis
An original Story
I crept down stairs carefully, making sure I wouldn't wake up Hailey. I knew she was a light sleeper. All night I had the same thought running through my head. I needed new auto insurance. I looked over my right shoulder to see the time on the clock haning on the wall. Three in the morning. I doubt any insurance company would be open this late in the night. I slowly picked up the phone, making sure it wouldn't make a noise as it left the reciever. I ran my finger down the yellowpages as I looked for the phone number of any auto insurance company. It just so happened that my finger landed on State Farm.
I pressed the numbers on the phone, cringing everytime It made a dial tone. I knew Hailey and my daughter Kaylee were sound asleep just one floor up. At least, that's what I thought. I put the phone up to my ear. It was ringing. A man's voice came on the phone within seconds.
"Thank you for calling state farm, this is Jake."
At that moment, I felt more comfortable with the call. We discussed all of the policys and everything I needed to know. He even asked if I was married. At that moment I asw the lamp turn on from behind me.
" Who are you talking to?" Hailey said. I could tell she was angry.
" Uh it's Jake.. from state farm.." I answered.. worried."sounds like a really good deal" I put the phone back up to my ear to continue talking.
" Jake from State Farm at three in the morning?" She grabbed the phone from my hand. "Who is this?" she asked.
" I repeated myself once more and told her his name.
" What are you wearing, Jake from State Farm?" She motioned quotation marks around his name, like I was telling her a lie.
I could hear through the phone, Jake sounded a little confused. "Uh, Khakis?"
Without hesitation, Hailey told me she sounds hideous. I wasnt too happy with that comment.
" She's a guy, so.." I answered. That seemed to get her quiet.
