Hello. My name is Tonya and I suffer from Trichotillomania. I currently have a few balding patches at the top of my head and slightly to the left and right sides because I compulsively feel the need to literally pull my hair out.
The word “trichotillomania” has the greek word for madness (mania), but the doctor that first studied it in 1889 found that patients with hair-pulling compulsions were emotionally healthy. Today, doctors now have the knowledge that the condition is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.
I developed trichotillomania when I was in the 6th grade. I am now a sophomore in high school. It is one of the hardest compulsions to get rid of, and I’ve been made fun of for it since I developed the condition.

Girls aren’t going to talk to you first. It’s a girl thing. We don’t like starting the conversation because we like to feel like you want to talk to us. We like to feel like the wait was worth something. We like feeling like you’ve waited for us like we’ve waited for you.
