FickleHearts
Chapter 5
The previous day had gone by quickly.
Amy opened the doors to her homeroom, only to be greeted by all pair of eyes on her.
"Here comes the girl who likes to call people 'annoying'!" Jake announced, a mischievous smile in his face.
Amy looked away, not daring to look into that idiot's face. Was she the only one who thought of him annoying? There had to be another person that disliked being around him...
Ignoring all the looks, she made her way to her seat.
"Seems like everybody knows your name, now," Lisa announced.
"Who has he told?" I muttered, getting out my stuff.
"So it is true?" Tara exclaimed, admiration in her eyes.
"Only the entire ninth grade," Lisa replied. "Some tenth graders know, too. So I'm thinking that by the end of the day, the whole school will know your name."
Amy sighed. "In a good or a bad way?"
"Half and half," Tara answered. "I will be the half who knows it as good."
Amy buried her face in her hands. "I only called him annoying... it's not like I punched him or something."
"Never has a girl called Jake any other name that's not 'cutie', 'hottie' or anything of that sort," Tara explained. "So of course, it's pretty shocking..."
Lisa smiled. "You're now like the protagonist of a chick flick."
"Chick flicks are stupid," Amy groaned angrily.
Lisa and Tara chuckled before the bell rang. Soon, Mrs. Fields was entering the classroom.
"Good morning class," she said.
"Good morning," some greeted back, including Amy (even though she was in a bad mood).
Mrs. Fields set her things down. "All here with older siblings might know of my class council system."
A lot of students nodded and agreed.
"But for the ones who don't," Mrs. Fields began. "Even though I'm probably the only teacher who does this, I enjoy making class councils. That is, class president, class secretary, etc. I'll write the positions down on the board, so begin thinking who you want to nominate. Of course, you can nominate yourself, too."
Amy patted Tara's shoulder.
Tara turned around, her eyes bright with excitement. "Nominate me for president."
"Thought so," Amy replied, grinning.
"Done," Mrs. Fields announced. "Now, to begin... president nominations?"
Amy's hand shot up.
"Amy," Mrs. Fields said.
"I nominate Tara Nash."
"Following your sister's footsteps, aren't we Tara?" Mrs. Fields asked with a giggle. "Any other nominees?"
Tara won, of course. The other positions were chosen, and it was finally time to choose the secretary.
"We need someone who, is not only privileged with a good penmanship, but is quick to jot things down," Mrs. Fields was saying.
However, no one rose their hands.
"Come on, students," Mrs. Fields sighed. "Nobody enjoys taking notes, I know. But come on... there's gotta be someone."
No movement from the class.
"Come on, class-"
"I'd like to nominate Amy Trent."
Amy's eyes widened, and then they narrowed in anger. That was Jake's voice.
Mrs. Fields smiled. "Thank you, Jake."
Amy snapped her eyes back to Jake. She whispered, "What did you do that for?"
"I saw you take notes in 10B," Jake replied, smiling ear to ear. "You're a fast writer."
Amy shook her head. "But I don't want to be secretary."
"No more volunteers, huh?" Mrs. Fields began. "Then it's settled. Amy Trent's our new secretary."
"Too late," Jake whispered, his eyes landing on Mrs. Fields.
"Now, it's time for the treasurer," Mrs. Fields said. "The treasurer has to be at least okay in math, and will spend quite an amount of time with the secretary-"
"I'd like to nominate myself," Jake cut in, gazing at Amy.
People hooted.
Some girls glared at Amy.
Tara gave a pitying glance to her friend.
Lisa giggled.
Amy wanted the ground to swallow her up.
"Alright," Mrs. Fields finally said, slightly chuckling after glancing at that 'couple'. "Any more nominees?"
The class remained silent.
"Then it's settled," Mrs. Fields brightly announced. "We've got our class council. Every Friday you'll stay one extra hour in school, discussing class matters."
The girl next to Amy winked. "You're a lucky one."
Amy's mouth parted open, as Lisa patted her back.
"Maybe Jake wanted everybody to know your name for more than one reason," she whispered.
Amy pressed her lips together as she slowly turned to look at Jake.
He was smirking at her. "Seems like we'll have a date every Friday."
One look at the glint in his eyes and she knew he'd done it to annoy her.
"As I said before," Amy murmured to herself, looking down at her desk. "He's utterly annoying."
