Scientists can have a good idea of it, though, because when you have an animal's skull and an idea of the shape of the neck and chest, you can put some constraints on what kind of sound will be made. In terms of knowing what their range or exact nature of vocalizations might have been. Also, some dinosaurs had crests on top of their heads that filled with air when the animal breathed. As air was pushed through these crests, they likely made a deep bellowing sound similar to a horn. Another clue is the size of their sinus cavities, inferring what kind of sound they made. Certain types of dinosaurs had large sinuses, and some had crests that amplified the sound. They probably were noisy, but roars like a lion were probably out of the question. Another indicator would be the hyoid bone in the throat, something most vertebrates have. This bone allows the animal to articulate sounds. We have a hyoid bone ourselves, giving us a large range of soundmaking capabilities. My guess is that dinosaurs roared, albiet not like lions. They probably sounded more resonant like seals, buffalo, elephants and moose.

Idk... maybe they can tell by the way the vocal chords are shaped or something. Apparently they can't tell what colour the skin would be and they're just guessing. That's what I remember hearing.
