7 ~ awkward is an understatment.
"I like your sense of style, Brandie," Cedrick added to his huge list of compliments that he said in the past 10 minutes.
"Oh, please. Stop. Really." Brandie smiled, but turned to me and gave a quick look. Yeah, she was dying. But i was enjoying myself. She finally got all the attention she wanted... except she didn't want it so intesnley. I'm pretty sure, in his seat, Cedrick was having some crazy fantasy about Brandie. His eyes were so intensley sensual, it was really awkward to look at him. And I never did.
But before things could get anymore creepy, it did.
"Dee, you want to go help me find a vending machine?" Cedrick said, eyebrows raised in potential sexiness. I looked at Brandie, but she didn't even look up. She couldn't tell that going to find a drink meant make-out session in Cedrick's ways. Yet, I knew she'd be okay. I said a quick "see you later." and checked my empty phone before feeling a stare on me.
Blake was staring at me the same way Cedrick was starting at Brandie. Crap. I thought. I smiled and looked down at my phone, texting Brandie, asking if she was there or not. After about 50 tries, no answer. I sighed, and looked up to still find Blake staring at me.
"So, uhm, want to go outside?" Blake asked shyly "I mean, if you want to." he smiled so awkwardly it was hard to say no, when he looked so damn hopeful.
"Sure." I grabbed my phone and put it into my bag. "Yes!" I screamed. There was a pair of jean shorts and a baggy longsleeve sweater in the bag. I must've thought I'd need them.
"Just wait here. I'm going to go change into, well, yeah..." I said and speeded off toward a bathroom, passing the vending machines. Brandie and Cedrick nowhere to be seen. Of course.
I found my way out of the washroom to find Blake waiting for me, already there, smiling. "Oh... you could've waited back at the McDicks, you know?" I stated, kind of boldly.
"Yeah, but I didn't want to make you walk all the way back there. Let's go." He smiled and grabbed my hand.
Well, this is awkward. I couldn't help thinking the entire time. The exit outside never felt so long in my life. Suddenly, Blake looked down towards his phone. I didn't say anything, I didn't really want to know about all the people he was texting, so I let go of his hand.
"I'll meet you outside, okay?" I assured, and ran towards the exit.
I really had to find Brandie. We were all falling for the wrong people.

    6 (1) ~ getting known.
I caught up to them, as they were choosing what to eat. Brandie looked over and waved me towards them. I smiled awkwardly and jogged to where they stood in line.
"Okay, Ash. What are you going to get?" Brandie looks over, and so do Blake and Cedrick. Jeez, I never knew how pressured picking an order at McDonald's could be until now.
"Uhm, quarter pounder no cheese." I said, looking at the menu above the cash "You guys?" I replied quickly, so the silence didn't cover us.
    "Salad." Brandie said almost automatically.
"Uhm, I'll get a Big Mac..." Blake said, looking at Brandie awkwardly. He probably thought she was a vegetarian.
"I'll get fries." Cedrick said. No food? Impresses Brandie, but she still couldn;t stop looking at Blake. I looked over and saw a group of teens leaving a table for four. Perfect.
"I'll get some seats..." I said, to whoever was listening, and turned to sit down before anyone else did. I heard someone behind me and turned. It was Blake.
"Oh, hey." I said, sitting down and taking my coat off.
"Uhm... hi. Ashlee, right? I mean, I-I heard it. Just making sure." He mumbled nervously.
"Yup, that's me. And you're Blake, right?" I smiled. Hey, better get friendly with Brandie's new boyfriend #1.
He hummed a yes, and turned away shyly, flipping his hair out of his eyes. I turned away awkwardly, too. I broke another consequetive silence.
"I think we should help them bring all the food." I laughed as Brandie struggled with a bag.
    "Yeah." he chuckled, let's go.

    5 ~ easiest rejection.
How on earth could one boy look so damn effortlessly good? He was just... beautiful. His black hair shiny and wavy, just enough to look fantastic. And then his eyes, his steel blue eyes that sent shivers down my spine stared at me in wonder, then at Brandie in interest. Of course, point 1 for Brandie. He smiled smoothly, then came up with his friend Blake. Blake was a perfect match for Brandie, it was just, surprising. Just by taking a look at them together, it was perfect. No doubt, he was a very handsome boy, with deep brown eyes and a very swooped Bieber cut, but with a mature face... which suited him. And it suited Brandie's boy hunger. It was like she was starving for days and finally got a huge turkey feast - Blake. I swear, she was about to drool all over him until I finally broke the damn silence.
"Uh, hey. I'm Ashlee..." I smiled awkwardly then looked at Brandie, who was drowning in thought. "...and uh, this is Brandie, which I guess you know, Blake." I smiled in my friendliest way possible.
"Yeah, we've met... Oh, and Ashlee, Brandie, this is Cedrick." he waved his hand in Cedrick's direction and put it down like he was nothing. I smiled.
"Hi!" Brandie smiled her megawatt smile and gave him her usual hot boy look.
"Hey..." he replied slyly, raising his perfectly bushy but not unibrowed eyebrows in a sexy way. I raged. What, 2 mintues within meeting the kid and he's already wanting Brandie? I could believe it, but I just didn't want to. Suddenly Brandie nudged me.
"And, yeah, like I said before, I'm Ashlee..." I smiled awkwardly again. Yeah, I just couldn't get my sexy looks on when he already seemed to be onto Brandie.
"Yeah, I heard. You already said that." he scowled.
"I-I know." I managed to add, but he was already back onto Brandie. I tried to push back the tears in my eyes.
"So, where to?" Blake asked, looking at all of us.
"Let's eat. I need something." she said, grabbing Blake's hoodie and Cedrick's plaid shirt and laughing as she drags them to the McDonald's. I trailed behind, already broken but not giving up.
It was time to beat out my best friend.

4 ~ butterflys? more like bombs.
After riding in Brandie's older sister's worn out car, I learned that Brandie's date, which she "forgot" to mention was Cedrick's best friend. Probably the only way she could get me a date with him.
"Woah, Ashlee. Are you okay? You look terrified. You alright?" Brandie's practically identical older sister asked me with a minorly worried face.
"Yeah, I'm great." I faked a quick smile and stepped out of the parked car, and waited for Brandie to fix her hair and makeup in the front seat mirror.
"Almost done, Brandie?" I said impatiently. I didn't even know where we were exactly, but I recognized it as a mall, with a huge Target and it looked extremly modern and fresh. It was to my liking. I studied the buildings crazy floor to ceiling glass walls and the rush of busy shoppers around it, but I couldn't really take it all in.
I was thinking about Cedrick again. I mean, I hardly know him anyway. Why am I freaking out, even in the slightest? I mean, I can't possibly have a chance, so I just sighed and prepared myself for the worst. Finally, Brandie glamourisly jumped out of the car and smoothed out the creases in her dress.
    "Ready?" she smiled eagerly.
I frowned, "If about-to-sh●t-myself is considered ready, then yes. I am so utterly ready for this." and began bouncing around. Something I embarassingly do when I'm nervous.
"Calm down, you'll be fine," Brandie began "oh, bye Carrie!" she waved at her sister's car, as it drove off into the traffic.
"Whatever. So, what are we doing at a mall, anyway?" I asked as we walked toward the entrance, barley dodging oncoming cars, and managing to get a finger pointed our way.
"Because," Brandie panted, continueusly looking down at her shoes, worrying about them no doubt. "this is the best place we could chill and have special moments in, you know?" she winked.
"Fine, but where are we meeting up with them anyway?" I wondered, pondering the thought of a scary awkward encounter.
"At that Smoothie Place in the food court." she replied.
"Oh. Well, how far is that, anyway?" I asked, as we stepped through the large automatic doors into complete Saturday mall chaos.
"Uhm..." Brandie slid through crying children and slow senior shoppers before finally coming back to see me."It's in section A. So, that way." She pointed right, and started marching along with me. Out of my dress pocket I pulled out my phone.
"It's already 2:30. When were we supposed to meet them?" I asked panically.
"Right now. Between 2:30 and 3:00. Don't worry so much, you'll be fine." she assured and kept ushering me faster. "I'm so excited, aren't you?! Wait, don't answer. I don't want your mopey replies to bring me down." she giggled.
"Well, what is this kid's name, anyway?" I looked at her cautiously. "Uhm, it's... Ryan. No... wait... it's uhm..." she twisted her lips in confusion.
"Really, Dee? You don't even know his name?"
"Shut up! I do know... it's... it's... OH! Blake. That's it." she smiled proudly to me, as we passed endless stores.
"I hope it is..." I murmered, and quickly ran towards a mall map. "Okay, we're almost there. Just past the Apple Store, and they should be right around the corner." I started breathing heavily again.
"Awesome! Let's go faster! Come on!"
I sighed, but followed Brandie faster and faster until we reached the food court. My heart renched.
    I should've given up.

    3 ~ the preparation
"Ashlee! Hey!" Brandie smiled as she waved my Dad goodbye. "Wait, where's your dress? No makeup either?! Come on, I hope you took the hint. I GOT YOU A DATE WITH CEDRICK! Now who's the bestest friend ever?" she smiled brightly.
Certainly not you, I thought. I sighed and took a deep breath. "Brandie. You know me enough to know that I don't do dates. Heck, I don't even do boys without being dumped by the end of the day. They just don't work, okay? I'm not pretty enough, slutty enough, or good enough for boys. I get it. So, don't bother setting me up with a guy who will just look past me." I puffed and sat down on her foyer floor, out of breath.
""Ash, you're so dramatic. You're beautiful, really. Have you seen your hair? It's so straight, I'd die for it. And, look, your eyes!" She pulled me up and pushed me into her washroom. "Look at their color! It's like a brown and green woods with a HUGE amber light in between. It's crazy. And, I mean, look. Just look. You can't call a face like yours ugly."
And so I looked. I stared at every inch of me in Brandie's full body mirror inside her enormus posh bathroom. All I could see was the wrongs. The short height, the overly skinny arms, the disproportionate face. Beautiful? No, far from it. Cedrick was handsome. I mean, maybe not his personality, I wouldn't know. But he was a damn beautiful boy. I just couldn't compare.
"You know what, Brandie?" I turned to face her perfect smile. "I'm no model, but I certainly am me. Let's find me something to wear." I strutted confidently out of her washroom, and up the stairs towards her room. Brandie ran behind, catching her breath when I finally reach her rooms' door.
:Woah, what came over you?" she panted, her eyebrows forming a questionable look.
    "Nothing. Just, let's get ready."
Brandie already picked out my dress. I took in it's cute form fitting bodice and flowy floral yellow pattern. She smiled as I took the whole thing is.
"It even matches your stupid shoes." she laughed.
I looked down, glancing at my worn out Ked's, the ones with the yellow laces and white canvas, and smiled. Brandie did care - about fashion anyway. I turned to go put it on, and in a flash, Brandie was all perfect and ready. She suited a hot pink summer dress with a midnight black lace belt hugging her perfect curves, pairing it all up with sequined black flats. A Brandie must.
"You like?" She smiled deviously, throwing her hair behind her shoulders.
"Thanks for completley upping me!" I laughed, nervously. "Just kidding, Dee." I added quickly. I didn't want her to go all speach mode about how I looked perfectly fine myself. I looked into the mirror again. Fixing my emo-style bangs and long, straight, belly-button lenght hair before taking another deep breath - probably my tenth in the hour.
"Ugh, don't make me start!" she eyed me. "I'm watching you." she pointed 2 fingers and her eyes than one back at me.
"I got it, Dee. Let's go."

2 ~ dating, the "blind" way
"Is Tim Horton's good for breakfast?" My Dad called from the kitchen.
"Sure. Small Hot Chocolate and a chocolate dougnut, please." I shouted back.
I flipped through my newest issue of Seventeen absentmindedly. It was a Saturday morning, just past 11, and the first thing on my mind when I woke up was Cedrick. I mean, really? So, he was cute. I needed for than that. But I guess my heart had enough. Just then, I heard my phone ring. Marry You by Bruno Mars blasted through my iPhone, the one that took me two years worth of saving up to afford.
    I checked the caller ID.
    Brandie.
"Hi Brandie." I said quietly, wondering what she wanted.
"You, Ashlee, are going on a double date with me, today." she whispered, giggleing.
I was scared to answer. "Uh, hold on Brandie..." I quickly said, covering the speaker.
    "Dad?" I called.
    No answer.
"Okay, my Dad's on a Timmy's run and I need to ask you something. Why? When? Who?!" I screamed.
"Look, all I need you to do is find a dress and be at my house by 5:30. I'll explain the rest there. Gotta go!"
    "Wait! Ugh."
The line went dead. I was freaking out. First of all, I didn't know who was going to be there, and I didn't even know if I was allowed to date. A nauseous feeling pounded my stomach. God, I really hated Brandie sometimes. I heard the door open.
    "Dad?" I called. "You home?"
"Yup, and I got Timmy's!" he smiled, his Portuguese face smiling bright.
He smiled like he did when Mom was alive. That bright, cheery, morning smile. God, how I missed that. Maybe he was happy enough for a conversation. About dating.
He walked past me in the foyer, straight into the kitchen; stainless steel appliances, dark java cabinets and granite countertops passed me by as I sat at the island in my kitchen, right with the sun warming me gently.
"Here, " my Dad slammed down the cup and brown bag in front of me. " is your meal."
    I smiled lightly. "Thanks, Dad."
He sat down, and looked up at me with his dark brown eyes.
"...So, Dad. What's on your mind?" I asked, cautiously.
"Well, I was gonna ask you the same thing." He chuckled.
"Oh. I mean... Dad, when did you uh start, you know... dating?" I blushed, and immediatley took a scoldingly hot drink of cocoa.
"Well, um... I was about your age, I suppose. Maybe younger... maybe older, I forget." He replied calmly.
"Well, then, can I?" I gulped.
"Yes, I guess so..." he chuckled again, and looked up at me. "You're so mature. Like your mother was."
    He smiled, teary eyed.
"How about I drop you off at Brandie's now? I overheard your phone conversation. I already had the Tim Horton's in the car."
"Yeah, Dad. Drop me off." I said, worried.
    I was going to cry.
    I needed out.
    I needed my Mom.

    The Love & Life of
    Ashlee Keesling♥
    Chapter 1
"Who here has ever been in love?"
My teacher, Mr. Mason asked the whole Grade 8 class this morning in homeroom. But I couldn't stop thinking about it. I mean, practically the entire class (though blushing) raised their hands. Except me.
"Ashlee, you must of been in love once, at least." They all said.
But it was true, I've never been. Being only thirteen, did I honestly have to be in love? Was it ruled that as soon as you became a teenager, you MUST have fallen in love? I didn't think so.
"Let's find you someone to love!" my supposedly 'best friend' Brandie had said after that embarrassing discussion was done.
"Of course, because falling in love is easy." I had told her. Her face was disapproving, but I just ignored it.
"It should be, now let's go find you someone." she smiled, and waited for the bell.
"He's cute! OH MY GOSH, what about him? Actually, I'd save him for me..."
"Brandie, please shut up and stop. Please. " I whispered.
Walking through my school's hallways were hard enough without Brandie stalking boys out for me.
She shook my shoulders, and yelled "Ashlee Keesling, I am finding you someone to love, whether you like it or NOT!"
"BRANDIE EVANS, " I exclaimed "PLEASE, THE RIGHT GUY WILL COME."
And to my surprise, he did. Right then. It wasn't like a movie, but somehow slow-motion was taking place, and I felt my cheeks burn hot red.
"Ash? You oka- Oh. So, you're looking more in the Cedrick direction. Maybe that's a little too much for you... Now, oh look! There's Danny,he's pretty cute, huh?"
I heard her, but I just couldn't respond. That boy literally took my breath away. Wavy jet onyx hair flowed to his ears, and his steel blue eyes looked at my curiously. My head snapped back into focus.
    "Ash...?"
    "Oh, yeah Brandie, sorry. "
Her golden blonde eyebrows scrunched over her green eyes. I mean, she was gorgeous. I was completely jealous, but I just looked at her with just as much wonder, anyway.
"You like Cedrick, don't you?" she smiled her megawatt smile. " Aww that's so cute! But he's totally out of you're league."
As I said before, Brandie was "supposedly" my best friend. I frowned.
    "No." I quickly replayed.
"Uh, yes, you do. Completely smitten."
"Aha, no." I rolled my eyes.
    "Fine."
"Uh," I blushed " is he new here?"
"Yeah, I don't know where he came from, though..." she looked at me again. "Ah, you so love him."
"No, I don't!" I said, for the last time that day.
    But that was a lie.
    I totally did.
