Jane
"Louis..."
Louis smiles at me. I nibble on my fingernails.
We kiss again.
I feel a tear on my cheek. It's a tear of happiness.
I am sad. I'm sad that Niall left me. I'm sad that Darcy's cutting. I'm sad that she hurt Aaron, Harry, and Zayn.
I'm very sad, but Louis makes me happy.
"Oh, God, Jane, you're crying." Louis wipes the tears from my cheeks.
I smile gently. "I'm crying because you make me so happy."
Louis kisses my nose.
"Jane, you know I really like you, right?"
I nod. "I do."
Darcy
I hear the doorbell ring.
"Who is it?" I call out.
"It's Niall."
Huh? I stand up and jog over to the door. I open it. It is Niall. He's wearing a coat and has a scarf wrapped around his neck.
"Come in," I say, a bit shocked. Niall walks over to the couch and sits down. I stiffly plop down next to him.
"So. You're here because...?" I stretch the last word.
"Look, I know you're hurt. Because of Jane. Me too. I know you've been cutting. I can understand. I'm really, really hurt. I caught her kissing Louis. I want to be happy for her, because she's obviously found the one she really loves. But I'm just heartbroken. And I have a secret, and I don't know why, I just can't put my finger on it, but you're the only one I want to tell, Darcy." Niall lifts his coat sleeve.
On his wrist is a single, fresh slice. The blood is barely dry.
"Oh, God," I mutter.
"This is my secret," Niall mumbles.
I get it. Niall and I share something now.
"I'm so sorry!" I cry, wrapping my arms around him. Niall shivers; he's still cold.
I feel so terrible. I hurt so many people. I destroyed hearts. Now I see it, through the blurry mask that's been sitting there like a bad hang-over. Now I'm going to help.
"It's okay," I whisper. "Stay strong."
Louis
"What was Lottie talking about with the carrots? I didn't check yet."
Jane giggles. "Try your drawer." She covers her mouth to hold back laughter.
I raise an eyebrow, but I run to my room. I open my drawer.
Inside is a bundle of carrots tied together with a little green ribbon. A note is hanging from it. I pick it up and read it.
I love you.
