    Chapter 1O.
We arrived at the movie theater fifteen minutes later. We made two more stops to pick up Max's friends. We first picked up Mills. He had shorter brown hair and wore a visor sporting an NCAA team. When he got in the car he whispered something to Max then told me that we should be lab partners because we have chemistry. It made me laugh pretty hard. Cheesy pick up lines were definitely my weakness. Next, we picked up Carter. Carter was really tall and had really light hair. He seemed nice. He didn't have too much to say to me which was a relief. The whole time we drove to the theater, there was talk of NCAA football and which team would be the best and which team would fall apart. When I spoke up, everyone got quiet and stared at me.
"Dude! Florida is going to be dead next year! Tebow was there whole team," Mills announced.
"I think they'll be all right. I hear they have a decent back up QB," I replied. The guys stared. "What?" Still stares. "I tried watching Project Runway! It didn't really work out." The guys laughed.
"A girl that knows football? Wow, you don't see those too often," Carter said.
"I'm Mr. Right, someone said you were looking for me?" Mills said. I laughed.
After we finally made it to the movie theater. We all bought tickets and popcorn. I didn't buy anything, thinking I would steal some popcorn out of Max's bag. We all took our seats. I made sure I ended up on the end by Max instead of near Mills who would probably bother me the whole time. When the movie began I reached into Max's popcorn bag. Our hands met and lingered there for a second. I pulled back first and blushed, popping a few pieces into my mouth. Half way through the movie, Max set his popcorn down by his feet. He yawned, stretched up, and put his arm around me. I let him keep it there and scooched in a little closer to him. When the movie was over, I stood up, and he took his arm back. As we exited the screening area discussing details of the movie. We came to the conclusion that the commercials made it seem better than it really was. We got back in Nate's Jeep and head back to everyone's houses. After being dropped off by the main barn, Max and I hopped back into the golf cart. We drove back in awkward silence. Thoughts were racing through my mind about Max and the movie. They all stopped when the cart came to a halt.
"I'll walk you to the door," Max volunteered.
"Okay," I replied. Can't turn him down!
We walked slowly toward the door, and I stopped to check my phone. 10:07. Forty-three minutes early. I tucked the phone away and turned toward Max.
"I had a fun time, thanks for letting me tag along," I said.
"Yeah, anytime," Max replied. He smiled. "Has anyone ever told you have beautiful eyes before?" I smiled. My eyes were boring and chocolate brown.
"Thanks," I replied. I blushed and smiled. Max leaned in and layed his lips on mine. I was shocked at first. My first ever kiss! It was with the perfect guy too. Max broke apart and wrapped me in his arms. I laid my head against his chest.
"I'll see you tomorrow, Kayleigh," Max said. I broke free to say "yes you will," but I was cut off by his lips on mine for one last time. Then he turned and headed straight for the cart. I smiled and walked inside. The Coach sat at the kitchen table reading a book. He looked up.
"How was the movie, Kayleigh?" I think he was more excited I was making new friends than I was.
"I was great, Coach," I said with a smile. "It was great."

    Chapter 9.
The Coach and I ate lunch together, and then I went up to my room, laid down on my bed, and looked through the pictures on my phone.
    "Summer nights!
    Everybody are you with me..."
I sprung up. I had fallen asleep. I grabbed my phone and pressed it to my ear without checking the call id.
"Hello?" I said sleepily with a yawn.
"Hey Kayleigh, it's Max." My eyes widened, and I sat up straight.
"Oh hey! What's up?" I said. Always a good rebound from an awkward greeting.
    "Nothing, you?"
"Nothing! Everything’s nice and boring over here." Max laughed.
"I was thinking, do you want to go to a movie tonight? My friend, Nate is driving. A few more of my friends are coming too," Max offered. I really hoped that didn't mean I was one of his "pals" or "guy friends."
"Sure! Of course, I would love to," I replied.
"Cool! I will pick you up in the cart at seven," Max said.
"Sounds great! See ya then," I responded. I was smiling from ear to ear.
"All right, bye Kayleigh." And with that I ended the phone call. I jumped off my bed and did a happy dance. I glanced over at my clock. It was 4:37 right now. I had plenty of time to pick out the perfect outfit and do my hair and make up. I ran to my closet to get started.
I waited outside for Max. I smoothed out my jean skirt and triple-checked for my cell phone. I had straightened the crinkles from my pony tail out, and my hair was worn down. I wore a simple white tank top with a pullover, light sweater on top. I had on my old brown rainbows. I had put on light make up; mascara and cream-colored eye shadow. Plus, I had my chapstick in my pocket. I was ready.
I checked my phone for the millionth time. It read 6:59. Max would be here soon. I spotted the yellow headlights of Max's old golf cart pulling into the drive. I walked toward the cart.
    "Hey!" Max exclaimed.
"Hey!" I replied with the same perkiness. I smiled and laughed. I hopped into the cart, and we were off.
"Nate said he'd pick us up by the main barn," Max said.
    "All right," I replied.
"We are also kinda riding over and picking up some more friends too."
"Aaw, c'mon Max! Don't tell me I just got stuck on night out with the boys!" I said jokingly. Max looked down. It WAS night with the boys. "That's all right! Back at home, I used to be first pick on the team when we were shooting hoops! I'm used to it!" Max laughed.
"We may have to challenge you to a game!"
Max pulled in front of the barn. A muddy Jeep was the only other car in the drive. A boy sat in the driver's seat, tapping the beat to a song on the steering wheel with his fingers. He looked up and waved to Max. The boy had blonde hair whiched he swished to the side.
"Shotgun!" I called and dashed over to the passenger door.
"Fine!" Max said like a little kid. The boy unlocked the doors, and I hopped right in. He seemed surprised...guess he was expecting Max.
"I called shotgun before he did," I admitted. "Hi, I'm Kayleigh!" I stuck out my hand for him to shake. He took it after a brief pause.
"I'm Nate," he said with a swish of his hair and a glistening smile. After he finally released my hand, I reached for the seat belt and buckled it.
As I was doing this, Nate turned around to speak to Max.
"New girlfriend already? Dude! It's like the third week of summer!" Nate began.
"She's not my girlfriend, Nate," Max replied.
    Geez, they were awful whisperers.
"Whatever dude," Nate replied with a mischievous smile.
"Just let her be, man," Max said.
"All right," Nate said in a sarcastic tone.
I cut Max off before he could say another word. "What movie are we going to go see?"
"I donno, what were you thinking," Nate said.
"I was thinking...romantic comedy!" I said sarcastically to see the expressions on their faces. I instantly got a double "NO!" I laughed. I hoped this was going to be a fun night...

    Chapter 8.
Max and I gave Daisy a bath then put her in the pasture to graze. I ended up pretty wet thank to Max started a water war, but I couldn’t complain. I had completely soaked him.
I grabbed my cell phone from the passenger seat of the car where I had left it. Mary Caroline said I could leave my saddle and pad in the tack room which was very helpful. I peeled off my chaps and put them with my helmet in the back of the car. I stuck my phone in my damp pocket. I looked back at Max. He was texting. I wondered who he was texting, hopefully not a girlfriend. He closed his phone and stuffed it into his pocket. “So what do you want to do?” Max asked. I shrugged.
“I need to go back to the house and change out of my paddock boots,” I said.
“Want me to give you a ride?” Max offered with a smile.
“Hold on, you don’t even have your permit!” Max pointed to his left. I looked over to find a muddy golf cart parked in front of the barn. I couldn’t help but laugh, and we made our way over to it. I whipped out my phone to quickly text the Coach:
going back 2 house. will be hangin around farm. call me wen u need me
I got a reply after taking my seat in Max’s golf cart:
Have fun! I will call u @ lunchtime.
I stuffed my phone back into my pocket and looked at Max. “Ready?” he asked.
“Yup,” I replied with a smile. He smiled back that gorgeous smile, and my cheeks turned that familiar shade of pink.
Max drove down the road, and we got to talking. We talked about my previous barn and school and town and such. Once we reached my house I thanked Max and walked to the back door. I waved to Max and stepped inside. I wasn’t greeted my Cowboy like normal. He must have been with the Coach. I pulled off my boots and tossed them by the door. I ran upstairs and hopped onto my bed. I picked up my camera that sat beside my bed. I flipped through my pictures of home and Sugar. It made me feel a little homesick.
Thirty minutes later, my phone beeped. I picked it up to figure out who was texting me:
    look outside on dock
It was from Max. I set my phone down puzzled and walked over to my window that overlooked the lake and woods where the trails were. I opened the window and looked down at the dock only to find Max staring up at me. He had on blue-checked swimming trunks on and no shirt. I gawked at his impressive pecs and abs. I snapped my mouth shut before I could make a fool of myself.
“What are you doing?” I called.
“Watch this!” Max yelled back. He backed up to the edge of the dock and performed a perfect back flip into the water. As soon as his head bobbed up to the surface, I applauded.
“Impressive!” I called. I smiled and laughed.
“C’mon down, the water’s great!” Max smiled and kicked around in the lake.
“All right!” I shut my window and went straight to my dresser. I only had one bathing suit. I would have to make a trip to Target soon. I ran to my bathroom to change. After I changed, I grabbed a towel and my phone. I tied my hair up in a high ponytail and dashed out side. I tossed my phone and towel into the grass. I stepped onto the dock and sat by Max who was kicking at the water.
“You do know how to swim, right?” Max teased.
“Of course not. You will have to save me if I fall in,” I said sarcastically Oh my gosh, was I flirting?!
“All right then,” Max said with a smirk. We both stood up. Then, Max attempted to push me into the lake. I twirled around, and we both ended up pulling each other in.
When we climbed back onto the dock, we were both almost in tears from laughing so hard. I looked at Max, and he looked at me. He brushed a piece away a piece of my hair that had fallen into my face and plastered against my forehead. We both became really quiet. Max leaned in closer and closer…
    “Summer nights,
    Everybody are you with me?
Let that igloo cooler mark your piece of paradise!
    Summer nights…”
“Shoot!” I jumped up from what could have been my first kiss and ran to answer my phone which played one of my favorite Rascal Flatts’ songs. I checked the collar id. It was the Coach. I groaned and brought the receiver to my ear. “Hey Coach,” I said rather unhappily. I looked over at Max who seemed confused and upset.
“Hey, Kay. Are you back at the house?”
    “Yes, sir.”
“Ok, I’m coming home so we can make lunch. I’ll be there in 10 minutes, all right?”
    “Yes sir.”
“All right, see you soon, Kay.” I hung up my phone and wrapped myself in my towel. Max walked toward me.
“I am soo sorry, Max! I gotta go. I’ll text you!” I said.
“Okay, but can we maybe hang out this afternoon?” Max asked looking at me with his beautiful, grey eyes.
“Sure,” I said with a smile. “See ya, Max.”
“See ya this afternoon,” Max replied. He leaned down and lightly pecked me on the cheek. Then, he ran off to his golf cart. I blushed even pinker than before and brought my hand to my cheek.
Best day ever? I think so.

    Chapter 7.
Mary Caroline gave me a leg up, and I landed lightly in Daisy’s saddle. The stirrups were perfect as always and didn’t need adjusting. I squeezed Daisy on. We walked down the road a bit until we reached a good-sized arena with jumps everywhere. It looked awesome.
“You want an easy-going lesson, Kayleigh, or do you want to work this lazy girl for me?” Mary Caroline asked with a smile.
“I can get her going!” I said with a confident look on my face. I glanced behind me. Max was sitting on the small, old, wooden bleachers that were placed right beside the area’s gate. He smiled, and I smiled back.
“Go ahead and pick up the trot,” Mary Caroline told me. I did so and squeezed Daisy into a forward, working trot. She was very lazy, but so was Sugar.
“Wow, Kayleigh! I am impressed! Your position is great! You showed in equitation classes didn’t you?” Mary Caroline asked.
“Yes mam,” I said posting steadily to Daisy’s easy trot.
“Awesome! Change directions,” I did so in a perfect half circle. “Sit the trot.” I sat deep the saddle, and kept my legs and hands perfectly still. “Drop your stirrups.” Mary Caroline asked me to perform more trot exercises, but nothing was really a challenge. Then we moved to cantering. I did simple changes, flying changes, wide circles, tight circles, extended canters, collected canters, figure eights, and then all of that with not stirrups. Not too hard. At home, Sugarplum and I were pretty experienced. We competed in hunter shows and 3 day events. We even tried Western pleasure, horsemanship, and even reining. Sugar was better under an English saddle though.
Before the move, one of my trainers, Kathryn, and I were schooling him over 3’ and 3’6 fences. For a 14.1 hh pony, he was brave and amazing. Our jumping record was 4’3. I was awesome. Sugar was a great pony.
“You jump too?” Mary Caroline asked as I approached her in the middle of the ring.
    “Yes mam,” I replied.
“What did you do specifically in your lessons and shows?”
“My pony, Sugar, and I showed in 2’6 to 2’9 in hunter shows, and we went beginner novice in 3 day events.”
“That’s excellent!” Mary Caroline seemed impressed. She walked over to a stack of poles laying on the ground between two standards. She set up an easy cross-rail.
“Practice over this,” Mary Caroline stated. “Trot in, canter out. Squeeze her off the ground.” I then proceeded to trot in a circle. I approached the jump very nice and straight. I squeezed Daisy hard. She picked her feet off the ground as I released and bent at my hip.
“Good, Kayleigh!” Mary Caroline called. I brought Daisy back to a walk. Mary Caroline pointed at a 2’ vertical. “Canter in.” I picked up the correct lead on the first try and made the jump looked very simple. Mary Caroline then looked at me. “I guess I will have to give you a challenge!” She made up a course of 2’6 verticals and oxers. I did it perfectly, and Mary Caroline sighed.
“If I knew you were this amazing of a rider, I would have totally put you on an advanced horse,” Mary Caroline scratched Daisy’s nose. “You want to ride again tomorrow?”
“Of course!” I replied. I never turned down a chance to go riding.
“Good! I’ll put you on a challenge!” I turned and exited the arena. Max caught up with me.
“So, what did you think?” I asked. I bit my lip hoping I was going to get a positive response.
“Wow,” Max said simply. I didn’t know if that was good or bad. I was considered a pretty good rider. I was in the top three riders at our barn, the other two being seniors. But hey, that’s what happens when you work your tail off and ride every single day and get home at nine.
“You think I did all right?”
“All right? Kayleigh, you are amazing! How do you do it?” Max asked curiously.
“How do I do what?” I replied with a puzzled look.
“How do you look so beautiful on a horse you just met? How do you rider her like you’ve known her for years. How do you ride so…extraordinary?”

    Chapter 6.
Mary Caroline and I walked through the main barn and across the dirt road. There was a large barn on the other side. I wondered how many horses were inside.
As we entered the barn, Mary Caroline slowed her pace. To my left and right there were horses and more horses.
“I was thinking you could ride Daisy today,” Mary Caroline started. “She is great! She needs a lot of leg though, but I bet you can handle that easily.” Mary Caroline slid open a stall door to her left. A pretty 15hh palomino horse looked up from her breakfast. She looked young but very sweet. “She was born and raised here. Now she is only six, but she rides like a steady fifteen-year-old. Daisy is the best lesson horse on the whole farm.” That’s good, I thought. She’s a lesson horse meaning she wasn’t for sale. The Coach wasn’t pushing me into getting a new horse too soon.
“Do you mind if I run and get my saddle?” I asked remembering it in the back of the truck.
“Oh yeah! Go right ahead!” Mary Caroline said with a sincere smile. “I have to catch a couple horses. I will be back in a few minutes!”
With that, I turned around and walked across the road and to the truck. I climbed up and stood on the side of the truck. I reached in and grabbed my saddle and my favorite saddle pad. It was my favorite color, pink, and had my initials on it. My best barn friend, Taylor, gave it to me before I left. It made me miss her.
I pulled at the saddle and pad only to find that the one of my stirrup iron was caught on the side of the truck.
“Need help,” a familiar voice said from behind me as I struggled to remove the saddle from the back of the truck. I turned around to find those beautiful grey eyes and the adorable face of Max Lovington looking back at me. I blushed.
“I think I got it,” I said. One last little tug and the saddle gave way. I hopped off the side of the truck and smiled triumphantly.
“I’m impressed,” Max said with a smirk. I laughed.
“That’s nothing! Wait ‘til you see me carry three Western pleasure saddles at once! Now that takes talent,” I declared smugly.
“You can’t do that!” Max denied.
“I’ll show you some time, but right now, I have a horse to groom,” I said and turned around. I really didn’t want to leave.
“I’ll help you out,” Max said catching up to me.
“What, you don’t think I can do it by myself?” I said sarcastically as we walked toward the barn, together.
“Of course! That’s exactly why,” Max teased. We approached Daisy’s stall.
“Hey, Daisy,” Max cooed while opening her stall door and grabbing her lead rope and halter all at once. “She’s really great!”
I dropped my saddle on a nearby rack. “That’s good to know,” I said, not in the sarcastic way! “Where can I find a couple brushes and a hoof pick?” I examined Daisy. She didn’t seem too terribly dirty, and I couldn’t find any shavings in her mane or tail.
Max walked Daisy over to the cross ties. “I’ll grab you some,” he said and dashed off to the tack room.
I smiled to myself. Yup, I was definitely falling for this guy I had met as of yesterday. I patted Daisy as I thought about Max and me as he came toward me bearing brushes and picks of all kinds which he laid on top of a nearby tack box.
“Thanks I said looking into his grey eyes. I smiled and so did he, bringing the blush to my face.
“You’re welcome. Need some help?” Max asked as I ran the brush I had just picked up along Daisy’s back.
“It’s okay, I got it,” I said. With that, Max picked up a hoof pick and got to work. I sighed. I couldn’t tell if he was being stubborn, wanted to help, or still wanted to hang around which I was totally fine with.
We finished brushing and tacking up in no time, and by the time Mary Caroline came back with two horses, I had put my hair into my helmet. Max had laughed at me the whole time I neatly put my hair into a blonde hair net and pulled it into my helmet. I was used to it. The Coach did the same thing.
“Ready to go?” Mary Caroline asked.
“Of course!” I replied with a smile taking Daisy’s reins off of her neck and sliding them over her head.
“Can I come watch, MC?” Max asked using a simple nickname.
“Sure,” Mary Caroline responded. “As long as Kayleigh doesn’t mind.”
“Um, sure!” I replied. How could I say no?

    Chapter 5.
I woke up early the next morning to the smell of pancakes. I smiled. The Coach knew they were my favorite. I looked over at my clock. It read 6:04. Wow, I thought to myself. It was pretty early, but I was used to it. Before summer began, I woke up at 5:30 every morning to get ready for school. And last summer, I woke up at the same time every morning to go train with Sugar for upcoming summer horse shows.
I hopped out of my bed that I had stayed up decorating with pink and green and blue throw pillows and blankets. I looked at the grey sweatshirt lying on top of my dresser and smiled as I recapped what happened last night.
First, I met the most awesome and perfect guy in the whole world, Max Lovington. He was the same age as me, but had an early birthday and would be turning fifteen next month, July. We would be going to the same school, HC Summit High School. He liked lacrosse, and if he hadn’t told me already, I probably could have figured that out by looking at the sweatshirt sitting on my dresser. After hopping into the truck with it on and the Coach asking about it, I told him all about my new friend here, not about my secret crush of course!
I pulled a hoodie over my tank top and brushed off my pajama shorts. I then headed downstairs and into the kitchen. I found the Coach laying pancakes on a paper plate.
“Mornin’ squirt!” the Coach said cheerfully. He was definitely in a good mood. “Want some pancakes?”
“Yes sir!” I said taking the plate he offered and pouring a pool of syrup on top of the stack. I grabbed a fork and started on my pancake mountain. I never ever turned down the Coach’s pancakes.
“Today, I was thinking you could take a lesson here, see how you like it,” the Coach said. I looked up to meet his eyes. This was only day two of Mountain Creek Farm, and he wanted me to jump right into riding. But I agreed. I could never seem to turn down a chance to ride.
    “All right, Coach,” I answered.
“Good! Finish up your pancakes and put on your riding clothes, so we can head out.”
“Yes, sir.” And with that I stuffed the last two bites of pancake into my mouth and dashed upstairs. I looked around my room. It was a great size. I walked over to my dresser and pulled out my favorite faded jeans as well as a simple button-down shirt. I opened the next drawer and pulled out my favorite worn, brown half-chaps. I smiled. I loved those things.
I then looked in my closet where my short paddock boots lay on the floor. I picked them up and placed them beside my bed. I ran off to the bathroom to get changed.
Within five minutes, the Coach was driving me, Cowboy, and my saddle to the main barn. I brushed off my GPA which I got for my thirteenth birthday. The blonde hairnets inside were new and they didn’t smell like Herbal Essences shampoo like my old ones. I glanced out my window and watched as barns and arenas passed me. I smiled, wondering what kind of horse I would get to ride.
The Coach and I walked into the main barn. We walked into the office. It was extremely nice. There was a kitchen area complete with a fridge, microwave, toaster, blender, and other kitchen appliances, not to mention the huge cabinets towering over the stove and counters. There was a TV area which had two massive, cozy couches which lay in front of a giant plasma screen. There was a talk bookshelf with books about anything horse-related you could think of. There were desks with file cabinets, probably containing registration papers and health records. This sure was one impressive office.
“Hey Jim!” the Coach called from across the giant room. I looked up to see Jim Lovington, owner of Mountain Creek Farm and father of the one and only Max Lovington, coming our way. He shook the Coach’s hand once he reached us. “This is my daughter, Kayleigh,” the Coach introduced me. Mr. Lovington smiled happily.
“Hello! I have heard so much about you! How old are you?” Mr. Lovington asked politely.
“I will be fifteen in October,” I stated with a smile.
“My son, Max, will be fifteen at the end of this month! Have you met him yet? He’s probably around here somewhere,” Mr. Lovington said.
“Yes sir, I met him yesterday. We are going to the same school,” I replied. Max. And me. Going to the same school! The thought made me smile even brighter.
“That’s great!” Mr. Lovington said. “So, Ted, do you need me to do anything for you?” He looked at the Coach. He seemed sincere too.
“Kayleigh has a lesson with Mary Caroline this morning. Do you mind telling me who she is?” the Coach asked kindly.
“Not a problem!” Mr. Lovington said. He scanned the room. His eyes rested on a brunette ponytail shuffling through papers at a desk area. “Ah, there she is! Mary Caroline!” he called. The brunette lady stood up and made her way over to us. She was on the shorter side and looked young, maybe in her twenties. “This is Ted Daniels and his daughter, Kayleigh,” Mr. Lovington stated. Mary Caroline’s eyes brightened up a bit.
“Of course! Are we still on for the lesson at eight?” she asked excitedly.
“Definitely!” the Coach replied. I looked over at the microwave. It read “7:27.”
“Awesome! I’ll show you what horse you will be riding, Kayleigh!” Mary Caroline said happily. She turned and walked out of the office. I smiled to the Coach and then followed. This was going to be a good day.

    Chapter 4.
Max and I walked through all the barns and around almost every arena. I learned five important things about Max:
Number One: He completely adored horses. He had been riding ever since the first grade. Max loved all types of riding, especially Western. He liked to show in freestyle reining competitions.
Number Two: Max’s last name was Lovington. That meant his parents, Jim and Mary Lovington, owned the farm.
Number Three: He would be attending as a freshman to H.C. Summit High School this coming August where he hoped to play lacrosse, his second favorite sport.
Number Four: I already had the cell phone number he had programmed into my phone memorized. Max also programmed mine into his.
And Number Five: Max Lovington was the most perfect, sweetest, funniest, coolest guy I have ever met. Who knew I would be crushing within hours of being here, someplace I fretted coming to for the past month?
After hanging out with Max for a while, my phone started to vibrate. It made me jump, and I scrambled to get it. I took it out and read the screen. It read “Coach.”
“Oh shoot,” I said frustrated. Max looked at me, confused. “Hey, Coach.”
“Hey, Kay, where are you?” the Coach asked.
“In front of the indoor arena.” Max took out his phone and sent a quick text. I was curious to know what it was about, but I decided to keep my nosy mouth shut.
“Can you meet me over in front of the office?”
    “Sure. Bye, Coach.”
    “Bye, Kay.”
I hung up the phone and looked over at Max. “Sorry Max, I have to go. My dad is waiting for me at the office.”
“I’ll walk you back,” he suggested.
“Okay,” I responded without a second thought.
Half way back, it was almost dark. A cool gust of wind hit me in the face. It sent shivers down my spine, and my teeth started chattering. Max noticed. He peeled off his H.C. Summit Lacrosse sweatshirt and held it out to me.
“Here,” he said kindly. He was now just wearing a simple t-shirt with his jeans.
“Are you sure?” I asked, hesitant to take the sweatshirt.
“Yup,” Max replied with a smile. I blushed, once again. He was so sweet.
I slid the sweatshirt over my head. It was so warm and super huge. Max laughed at how big it was on me, and I couldn’t help but giggle also. Even in the moonlight, his smile still sparkled.
Once we got back to the main barn where the office was, I glanced down to make sure I hadn’t lost Cowboy. Nope, still right by my side.
“Thanks Max. The farm is beautiful,” I stated with a soft smile. “See you tomorrow?”
    “Yeah, see you,” Max replied.
Before I turned to leave, he wrapped me into a giant hug. I wrapped my arms around him and smiled. It felt nice. “’Night, Kayleigh,” he whispered.
“’Night, Max,” I said I we broke away from each other. He smiled and turned to go. I watched him walk off until I heard the Coach call my name and walk out of the barn.
    “Hey, Kay,” he greeted.
    “Hey, Coach,” I responded.
    “Ready to go?”
    “Yes, sir.”
After we got in the car the Coach looked at me funny. “Whose sweatshirt is that?” he asked curiously.
I looked down to find Max’s lacrosse sweatshirt still on. I laughed at my forgetfulness

    Chapter 3.
The Coach drove around the lake, past the arenas, and parked in front of the largest barn out of the bunch of them.
“This is the office, it’s in the barn. Isn’t that neat?” the Coach said. He smiled with excitement. He reminded me of a four-year old who just got a visit from the tooth fairy. I laughed at the funny though.
Cowboy jogged at my side. I never used a leash with him. He rarely ever got into trouble. With me, the worst thing he did was run after a squirrel, and he almost got hit by a car. That was when he wasn’t even a year old. Cowboy never ran after squirrels again.
We walked down an aisle of stalls that were mostly empty. When we got halfway down the aisle of stalls through the barn, the Coach stopped. I looked to my left to find a lounge-like office. I looked through the glass door to find two or three desks, a kitchen area, a huge trophy cabinet, and many more awesome things.
“I am going to check-in here. You can hang out around the farm. Do you have your phone with you?” the Coach questioned. My new enV Touch. It was a present from the Coach for being such a trooper in the move, and selling my horse, and all of that.
“Yes, sir,” I responded. I patted the pocket of my jean shorts to show him that I didn’t leave my phone at home.
“All right then. Stay out of trouble, okay?” the Coach said. He knew I wasn’t the trouble causing type and loved to make fun of me for it.
“Okay, Coach,” I said while slowly walking backwards, waiting for his signal to say I could go explore. He nodded and walked inside. I immediately turned around. SMACK! I slammed right into someone standing right behind me.
“Oh my gosh, I am so sorry!” I instinctively said. I looked up to find two gorgeous grey eyes looking right down at me. It was a boy about my age. He had dark brown, swishy hair and an adorable smile on his face. I blushed with a nervous smile on my face and looked down.
“Hey, it was all my fault. No big deal,” the boy said. He looked about 5’7,’’ much taller than me of course. “I’m Max. I haven’t seen you around here.”
“I’m Kayleigh. My dad’s the new head trainer here,” I responded. I tried to refrain from blushing an even brighter shade of red.
“Well, it’s very nice to meet you, Kayleigh.” He flashed me that dazzling white smile I had first encountered. He crouched down in front of Cowboy. “Hey buddy.” Max scratched the spaniel’s ears.
“That’s Cowboy,” I said. It was followed by a giggle after he completely rolled on his back to get Max to rub his belly. Max did, and then he stood back up. He brushed off his blue jeans.
“He’s great,” Max said with another bright smile. I looked down at Cowboy. He was on his feet and wagging his tail excitedly.
“Well, I better get going. See ya around,” I said. “C’mon, Cowboy.” I began to walk off.
“Wait, Kayleigh! I turned around and faced Max. Gah, he was gorgeous. “You want me to show you around sometime?” he asked. I smiled brightly.
    “How about now?”

    Chapter 2.
Before long, the gravel turned to dirt. I turned to look at the tiny back seat of the truck. I found my English Springer Spaniel, Cowboy, asleep. He was my twelfth birthday present. He was two now. I loved that dog. He was the sweetest and most obedient and loyal thing you have ever seen. I would take him to the barn almost every day. Cowboy would act carefully and cautiously around the horses. He was very smart.
“Kayleigh, look,” Coach said with a smile. There were pastures everywhere to my left and right. Horses of all different breeds and colors grazed and played with one another. Barns came into view. They were nice barns with trailers lined up outside.
Wow, I thought. This place was very, very nice. I hoped I would fit in. There were outdoor arenas and an indoor one too. There was a dressage ring and several rings with bright colored jumps in them. On my right, there was a class going on. They were jumping huge fences. I admired their outstanding position over the jumps.
I could start to see the beginning of a cross country course, far out on my left, and a lake far out there as well. We drove a little farther until we reached the lake. The Coach pointed out to the lake. I squinted and looked closely, shielding my eyes from the bright sunlight. I saw a little house with a small dock out front.
“Who lives there?” I asked him curiously.
“Us!” Coach exclaimed excitedly. We both smiled happily.
We drove a little ways more until we reached the little lake house. Coach pulled into the driveway.
“Cowboy!” I called, “Wake up, boy!” Cowboy raised his head and perked up his ears at the sound of his name. “C’mon, bud,” I said and the Coach and I hopped out of the car. I opened the back door, and Cowboy hopped out. He immediately came to me wagging his tail. I knew he wanted to play, but Coach and I had other things to take care of like move all the bags and boxes into the house.
We moved all the bags and boxes into the house within fifteen minutes. It was a two story house. My room was on the second story. I laid all my boxes and bag on the floor. I did go through one because I was looking for a hairbrush. I brushed out my brown hair and tied it up into a loose ponytail in the bathroom. I looked in the mirror and sighed. I was short. Only five feet and one and a half of an inch. And I was fourteen! I was pretty skinny though.
“Kayleigh, you want to go look around?” the Coach called from downstairs.
“Sure, Coach!” I responded. I brushed off my jean shorts and flicked a speck of dirt off of my tank top. I ran to my room and slid on my duck shoes. I ran downstairs with Cowboy, who had been wandering around in my room, at my heels.
We ran outside and hopped into the truck where the Coach was waiting. He had already parked the trailer beside the small driveway.
“Ready to go, Kay?” he asked me. I felt like saying something sarcastic like “Nope, I want to sit in my room all day in the middle of June, reading my new textbooks.” But I simply responded with a “Yes sir.”

    Chapter 1.
I sighed as I stared out the window of my dad’s pickup truck. The sound of the empty trailer clunking and rattling filled my ears.
I did not want to move, especially not this far away. My dad had gotten a new job. He was asked to be the head trainer at Mountain Creek Farm. He can do anything, you name it. He can get an amazingly low score in dressage; get first in a race against twenty other horses and jockeys, and to top it all off, he makes a mean cheesecake.
Unlike most kids, I don’t call my dad “Dad.” I call him “Coach.” He’s been my coach ever since kindergarten when I was only five years-old. That was the year my mom died.
After she died, my dad looked to horses. Before I was born, horses were his whole life. They helped him to move on after the tragic incident.
He got me into riding, and that is where it all started. He coached me and taught me everything I know now. The Coach got me my first pony when I was seven. He was a 14.1 hh Quarter Horse and Connemara cross. He was the cutest little gelding ever. His name was Sugarplum. Sugar was only two when we got him so he hadn’t been properly trained. Amazingly, within six months of the Coach’s training and him getting used to little seven year-old me on his back, he was perfect. I loved that horse more than anything. I am fourteen now. We have had the best seven years together.
We sold Sugar two weeks ago. I know he’s going to a great rider who rides at my old barn, but I will miss him so much. He was the best friend I could ever ask for. Coach swore he would find me a new horse as soon as possible, but I don’t think he could ever find anything to top my Sugarplum.
I felt the bumpiness of a gravel road and looked up. In front of the truck was a huge sign reading “Mountain Creek Horse Farm.” We turned and proceeded to a huge closed gateway. As the Coach punched in a combination, I took a deep breath, bracing myself for what would be on the
    other side.
