Monster
Chapter fourteen
"Where were you at lunch?" Mandy whispered as Mrs. Brink began her lecture on meiosis and mitosis.
"I, uh, wasnt hungry. So I, uh, went to study hall and did my homework." I lied. We were in our seventh period biology class. Mandy sat next to me at one of the lab tables.
"Well you could have told me. I would have ate in there with you."
"I wanted to be alone." She nodded and pretended to be paying attention to Mrs. Brink.
I opened my notebook and began to draw absent-mindedly on the first page, unable to pay attention to Mrs. Brink's boring lecture on something we learned in 8th grade.
"Jessie?" Mandy's voice whispered in my ear.
"Huh?" I asked, startled at why she said his name. She pointed to my notebook and I looked down. I had been drawing his name all over the paper in big, bold letters with tons of hearts around it.
I quickly closed my notebook, looking back at her.
"Why were you drawing Jessie's name?" She asked. When I didnt reply, she continued. "Amy, I told you to stay away from him! Hes a freak!"
"Hes not a freak!" I objected, feeling offended by her words.
"Ha, oh please! He does drugs, that screams freak to me."
Before I knew it, the sentence shot out of my mouth and I replied by saying, "What if I did drugs too?" Mandy stared at me, her eyes wide.
"are you saying that you..." She trailed off.
"No!" I answered quickly. "I mean no, of course not." She sighed a bit of relief.
"Whew, good. But really Amy, you shouldnt hang out with him."
"I dont." I lied once more. "I was writing about, um, that Jessie guy off of that one episode of Hannah Montana. Yeah, him. Hes dreamy." I wasnt completely lying. I mean he was totally hot. But I had been writing about my Jessie.
"If you say so." She narrowed her eyes at me, but turned to look at Mrs. Brink. I sighed, thankful she hadnt completely thought I lied.
I shoved my notebook back in my binder and tried to pay attention to Mrs. Brink. The period seemed to crawl by, taking forever to end. But when It finally did, I washed washed in relief.
One more period left before I would be able to spend some good, quality time with Jessie. And I had more than a walk in the park in mind.
I walked to my locker to pick up my health book, a smile plastered on my face. Once I reached my locker, someone tapped me on the shoulder. I spun around, expecting to see Mandy standing there, waiting for me. But it wasnt.
"Johnny?" I said, shocked. He didnt reply. Swiftly, he bent down and kissed me passionately on the lips. I pushed him away, puzzled by his actions.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
"Amy, I want you back." He said, going in for another kiss. I pushed him back once more.
"Johnny, no. You broke up with me, remember? Two days ago!"
"Yeah and I realize I made a huge mistake. I love you Amy." He kissed me again and I struggled against his hands around my waist. Out of the corner of my eye I caught a glimpse of Jessie, standing two feet away. Anger and hurt flashed across his face before he bolted out the front doors.
"Jessie!" I shouted, breaking away from Johnny and running after him. I ran out the doors, searching for him. I saw him, sitting on the low, metal bench right outside the doors.
"Amy, go away!" He said as I walked over to him.
"No, Jessie, that was nothing." I replied. He looked up at me. His eyes startled me, much as they had the first time we talked. They were back to being cold and dark. The sadness in them had returned. He looked aged, older and more wise than he had at lunch.
"It didnt look like nothing." He spat. He stood up and briskly began to walk away.
"Wait." I said, grabbing his arm. He turned around.
"Dont, Amy. Dont try to feed my lies and bullshit. I dont want to hear it."
"Jessie, I'm not lying! I swear, that was nothing. Johnny kissed me!" As if he had heard me call his name, Johnny came bolting out the doors.
"Amy, there you are." He said.
"Oh look, your knight in shining armor." Jessie mumbled, turning to walk away.
"Jessie, dont. Dont leave!" He paused, but didnt turn around.
"Come on babe, lets leave this freak." Johnny said, grabbing my waist. His words unleashed anger inside me.
"Hes not a freak, Johnny!" I shouted. "Jessie is amazing and wonderful. His eyes remind me of a bright summer sky. His voice, soft and delicious, is like a poet, whispering beautiful words in my ear. His touch, exciting, I long for." I looked over my shoulder as I spoke, gazing at Jessie as he observed me.
"Amy, you cant actually like him." Johnny's voice was filled with discussed as he spoke the words. I looked at Johnny for a brief second.
"I dont just like him, Johnny. Its way more than that." I spun around and look at Jessie, his arm out-stretched towards me. I smiled and ran to him, letting him wrap his arms around me.
"I dont care." I whispered, breathing in his appealing smell. "I dont care who knows about us. I'm crazy about you." I looked up at him, smiling.
"Ha, your right. you are crazy." My smile faded. He stroked my hair. "I'm crazy about you too, Amy. Even though we met four days ago, I am absolutely crazy about you." My smile returned. Jessie leaned down and kissed me softly on the lips.
"Oh, wait until everyone hears about this." Johnny said. I pulled away from Jessie and turned to look at him.
"Tell them. I dont care. Being popular is not worth giving up on someone who your crazy about." I replied. Johnny was at a loss for words, unable to respond. Obviously, he had assumed I would come running back to him, thinking popularity was more important than Jessie. He was way wrong.
"You know what, you played me!" He replied.
"Oh, I played you? Ha! I wasnt the one sleeping around and keeping secrets. Nothing happened between Jessie and I until after you broke up with me."
He opened his mouth as if to say something more, but then closed it, deciding not to. He gave Jessie and me a stern look before returning inside.
I turned back to Jessie.
"Your really going to give up your social status for some fun times with me?" He asked, a smile planted on his face.
"Of course I am." I replied, raping my arms around his neck. He bent down and kissed me once more.
Jessie was way more than just a boyfriend at this point. He was a friend, someone I could talk to, and also the only person I could have a play-date with the Monster with. At that moment, I had no idea what would unfold for us in the future. And trust me, they werent all good.
