Next To You
chapterone.
One minute my best friend Josh Howell was driving down an abandoned road with me in the passenger seat and the next I was waking up in dimly lit and very painful place. I whimpered and tried to move my legs. Pain shot up my spine and I let out a blood curdling scream. A hand rested on mine and my voice stopped short. "It's just Josh," a voice whispered. “It hurts,” I groaned. “It hurts, it hurts, it hurts,” I chanted weakly. Josh stroked my cheek and looked around. The late afternoon sun lit up the car just a little. He crawled out the shattered window holding his bloody ribs. “Can you move?” he asked in a hushed voice. I didn’t know why he was being so quiet. It wasn’t like someone was watching us. “No,” I gasped. “I can’t move my legs.” I nodded towards my lower section as I tried to move them again. My punishment was another shot of pain up my back. Josh forced the door open and reached across to unbuckle me. “This is gonna hurt,” he warned as he slipped his arms under me and pulled. I groaned. “Just let me die,” I whimpered. “Please, it hurts too much.” My eyes slid shut and I groaned. “Come on Amy, stay with me,” he pleaded. Very slowly and as gently as he possibly could, he set me on the ground and laid my head in his lap. "You can't die on me now." I reluctantly opened my eyes and looked up at Josh. His soft blue eyes were full of tears and his chestnut hair was matted with drying blood. When he looked into my drooping eyes, I felt a spark and tried to smile. As my eyes slid shut I realized something that I had been hiding for the six months we had been friends. I was in love with him.
