Aaralyn saying that made me travel into deep thought of the time we first met.. she broke my thought saying..
“Remember the first words I said to you Jayce?” She said in her sweet tone.
I replied “Yeah, yeah I do..” and then our words met in sync.. “You are one odd man, I must say. But that’s okay, ya know?”..
Those words. Those exact words were the first words she had ever said to me, and I remember it like yesterday.
I was sitting in the school library. I was a senior, she was a junior. She was there reading one of those romantic novels, and I was there trying to get out of doing school work.. normal for my age I guess. I was sitting around with a few of my buddies spitting spit balls at the librarians behind. I remember this moment like yesterday, her eyes locked into mine.. I couldn’t help but stare at that beautiful smile. It had a mystery to it. She gave a little giggle and said those words. Those words that rang in my head all night. Those words that started everything “You are one odd man, I must say. But that’s okay, ya know?”.
She caught me off my train of thought again, giving a warm sigh from her hospital bed where she lay. I ask “Sugar, are you alright?”
she says “Yeah, I’m great actually. Just thinking about our lives, and how great we’ve spent them together. Don’t miss me too much. Okay?” she gave ,me those words with tears in her eyes, as my eyes started to swell up also.

She lay weak and still in the hospital bed. It broke my heart seeing her in pain, and knowing this may be the last few hours I will spend with Aaralyn, my wife of sixty years. Wow, sixty.. saying it to myself really makes it seem long, even though in reality our time together went by as fast as a speeding bullet.
“J..J..Jayce..? Is that you?” She said in a sleepy crackling voice. She has just woken up.
“Yes sweetie, it’s me. How are you feeling?” I asked her, in a sad but comforting tone. I knew the answer wasn’t going to be good. The doctors are giving her 17 hours tops, left of her precious life. Or no, our precious life.
“I’m..not fine. Could be better, ya know?” I always loved the way she says ‘ya know’ with that sweet southern tang, from the first moment we met. It made her.. her.
“Yeah, I know doll, I know.” I gave a half smile, just thinking of all the times we’ve had together. Great times, times worth taking up my memory.
“Jayce, I want to go back. I want to go back to when you were 17 and I was 16. I want to go back to that night at the beach. I want to go back.” Her saying this made my emotions go wild. It made me remember every moment we’ve ever had together, like the first second we met.
