Long ago in a field by a old apple tree, was a spot reserved for just you and me.
We'd talk for hours in the tall warm grass.
Life changing moments that would not last.
On a broken down fence we shared our woes.
Me and you we were perfect, I suppose.
But I was a kid and things were bound to change.
Human nature is funny, we're never content, whose to blame.
So on that night with a slight autumn chill.
I ended our relationship, then you grew still.
I could see in your eyes you were already gone.
And where you were going no one belongs.
See all we had was each other, no parents around.
My dad the drunk, your mom spread around town.
So when I broke your heart it shattered your soul.
Creating a downward spiral, trapped in a hole.
Drugs and wild parties became common place.
One night while driving you made a mistake.
How cruel and cold our lives can be.
You lost your life, hitting our very tree.
A burden I'll carry for all my days.
My selfish action caused your drug filled haze.
No matter where that elusive truth may hide.
The grass ain't always greener on the other side.
