I clasped the rope in my hands and tried to remember what I had learned from my neighbor, Luke who was two years older than me, when he was in boy scouts.
“What are you doing here, Macey?” He said to me as I climbed through to hole in the fence.
“I wanted to play with you,” I mumbled, fumbling with the hem of my skirt.
“What, Macey?” Luke bowed his head and looked back at his friends pointing at us.
I opened my mouth to speak again but was cut off by one of the boy scouts, “Who’s that, Luke? You’re girlfriend?” Laughter from the rest of the troop was quick to follow.
I stamped my foot. “Shut up, Byron! Luke is not my boyfriend!”
Byron smirked at me. “Right, ‘cause you’ll never get one!”
I bursted into tears right then and there and the boys continued to laugh. This set Luke off and he told them to stop. He took me into his arms and pulled me close, wiping my tears.
Vincent wasn’t the one I had lost my virginity to.
Luke was. And he took his last breath shortly after.
A memory of Luke teaching me how to make a noose came to mind and I quickly finished it before it slipped away. Luke’s face in my mind made me cry harder.
I stumbled towards to stairs on the left-side of the stage and crawled up them, dragging the rope behind me.
I took one step out and felt the rafters squeak under my body weight.
I walked out to the middle of the rafter right on top of the stage and started to knot the rope around the rafter and let it hang down limply above the stage.
I closed my eyes and pushed away my tears with my sleeve and clumsily slipped it around my neck. I closed my eyes and gripped the side of the rafter and peered down.
I knew that once I let myself fall, there was no turning back. My neck would break and I would be gone.
The longer I stared down, the shakier I got. I was getting so scared. My thoughts were going through my head a mile per second. My soul was leaving my body and my knuckles were turning white. My vision was starting to get blocked as black spots cluttered my eyes and my ears were filled with a blaring ringing sensation now.
Maybe that’s how I never heard him coming up the stairs. But I did hear him scream.
And his scream startled me so badly, I lost my balance.
So, I guess I'm finishing out this story. For now.
