Somewhere in Cali
Chapter 1 (excerpt)
"Bye mom!" I yelled as I bounded down the steps and out of the house.
I slowed myself after the first minute and walked at a normal pace to the bus stop as cool crisp air whipped around me seeming to take hold of my ecstatic mood.
By the way my name is Estrella Mercedes Quinones.
You can call me Strell.
I live here in Lakeshore Town, Nevada...population -5.
It's pretty much in the middle of nowhere.
It’s the first day of school.
Not a good time for me or anyone else who's best friend has left them all alone.
It's not like it was Jessenia's fault anyways.
Smart people like her move up a grade a lot I suppose.
That thought keeps my mood from dropping.
At least I know that I’m not the only one going through this.
There must be some other kid out there feeling the same way that I do right now.
They are probably upset that their best friend moved up a grade as much as I am.
It was just a little hard to go through your last year of middle school all alone.
Somehow, I was still in a happy mood even while thinking of all of these things.
"Hi." A voice startled me from behind.
I turned to face a tall, lean boy who seemed to be in the same grade as me.
He towered over me easily and something about his expression intimidated me.
That didn't seem possible for me.
"Uh...my name's Landon. Landon Coin." he grinned at me with a cocky expression and a stereotypical Jersey dialect.
His green eyes were sparkling.
Actually they were lighter than a normal green.
There was a ring of pure gold around his pupil that made his eyes seem mesmerizing as I stared at the ring of gold.
Something about his "too cool for school" expression gave me the impression that he was used to this.
Used to girls staring at that ring of gold.
I wouldn't give him that satisfaction.
I dropped my gaze for a moment but returned it, this time standing my ground.
This time I was showing him I was not prisoner to his glorious eyes.
I was taken aback by the waves of emotion that I had just felt within a millisecond.
"I'm Estrella Quinones. I take it you’re new around here." I guessed making sure my voice sounded powerful.
It seemed to work.
He leaned forward just the slightest bit closer.
He probably didn’t even notice his proximity towards me.
But I did.
“Hmm. Seems you’ve been paying attention to me.” I could tell that he could smell the challenge I now presented to him.
“Hardly, but of course I would notice if someone’s new since I know every one of the losers here.” I retort.
“Oh, and would I be a part of that list? The list of losers I mean.” He asks innocently.
“We’ll just have to wait and see.”
I turned around swiftly and noticed the bus had finally gotten here. I sat up near the front, trying to close myself off from anyone else on the bus.
Sure enough, Landon decides to sit up front right across from me.
He smiled at me once before turning his direction to the window beside him.
I could tell he didn’t feel like talking.
As if it was his choice to decide whether we talked or not.
No way was I going to let him decide when we conversed and didnt.
Yeah, I’m a control freak.
I can admit to that.
“Scared?” I asked.
“What?” he turned to me momentarily confused.
“It’s your first day of school. I can show you the ropes if you like.” I offered.
“Alright then. Show me the ropes.” said Landon.
“Really? I wasn’t being literal. Haven’t you ever heard of an empty gesture?” I asked sarcastically.
Landon cracked a smile.
“Just explain.”
I smiled back.
I was really going to like this kid.
