Envied Love
ChapterTwelve
I ran down the streets, heart pounding, blood pumping through my limbs. I ran to the end of the main street then down to the old part of town. It was mainly deserted and was home to a lot of vandalism and abuse. I was scared but my urge to run overcame the part of my brain that was telling me to stop, to turn back. Blocks of old boarded up flats and ancient warehouses filled my view. I saw an old hunchback tramp wandering about ahead of me, trailing plastic carrier bags full of junk behind him. I turned down an alley to my left and had to stop breathing through my nose. It stank.
I took a deep breath and sat down on a sturdy looking block of wood. Then I put my head in my hands. When I looked up I froze. A large dog was standing at the entrance to the alley. It hadn't seen me. It's head was down, scrounging for something to eat, I guess. I slowly got up and backed towards the wall. I stuck my hands out behind me, my focus not wavering from the dog and backed into an alcove in the wall. I could still see it but I doubted it could see me. It turned back out onto the street and I breathed a sigh of relief and leaned back against the wall at the back of me. I heard a creak and then I flew back, landing on my back with a massively loud THUD. Oh crap.
I could already here the eager scuffling of the dogs feet on the dusty, dirt floor of the alley bounding up to see what had happened.
I got up and ran for it, sprinting through the warehouse, dodging in between the random odds and ends that had been left here from years ago. I chanced a look behind me. The dog was sniffing at the door, I could see it's silhouette; and then its head snapped up. I could feel its eyes on me so I ducked and slid under a machine. I cowered in the shadow of it and saw the dog's feet skid past. I breathed out and crawled out from under the machine. I looked round for the dog, hands by my sides, crouching slightly. No sign of it. It must have left.
Then there was something wet and warm on my hand. I spun round in fright. The dog was there, and it had been licking at my hand. At least it hadn't tried to bite me, I thought.
I reached out tentatively and patted the top of its head. I backed away slowly and it followed me. After a while I grew used to it, and, wandering through these lonely streets, I liked the company. I turned round a corner and froze again. Why was this place so creepy? Five grown men were wandering about drunkenly, laughing and holding large bottles of alcohol. They were coming my way. I darted back into the shadows of the alley, the dog behind me.
After a few minutes, the first of the men went past. I stayed silent and still and waited for them to all go past. As the last two went past, jeering and pointing at random bricks and finding them funny, I couldn't help it; I sneezed.
They stopped in their tracks and looked my way. I bit my lip and then charged out of my hiding place trying to slip by before they could grab me. They had spotted me already, and reached out for me so I feinted to the left and darted forward to my right. One caught me around the waist and cackled.
"Help!" I screamed, but I didn't expect any help. No one would hear me in this lonely place. I lashed out with my arms and feet and I felt my foot connect with his hip. He cried out and loosened his grip and I freed myself. Then I punched another one square in the nose. He yelped and clutched at his face. By this time the others had joined them and they had circled round me. There was no escape. If I tried to battle it out, there was no prizes for guessing who'd win. I sagged but then instantly jumped to alert as the dog launched himself into the crowd and snarled and bit and barked. The men converged on him so I ran at them and started whacking, kicking, punching and soon enough they ran. Once they were gone, I felt my legs go out from under me. I fell onto the hard ground and my eyes closed. The last thing I saw was the dog padding over to me and laying down by my side.
