Sparks Fly
Chapter 4
Thirty minutes later, I found myself running around the perimeter of the school searching for an open door.
“Damn it! I need to pee!” I nearly screamed.
“We can show you where the bathroom is,” a slurred voice said from the shadows.
The voices were all too familiar.
A couple months ago, that voice would’ve been mine.
“No thanks,” I replied, backing away.
“We’re perfectly friendly,” a raspy voice persisted.
“Afraid of us?” another voice asked.
I bit my lip.
The smell of smoke, alcohol, and drugs were evident in the air.
These were my demons.
Rehab should’ve gotten rid of them.
Why were they still here in my life?
“Go away!” I screamed.
I can’t believe I was once friends with people like this.
I turned around to run, but someone stepped in front of me.
He had short spiky brown hair and piercing blue eyes.
“Hey, chill. They just like to frighten people,” he said, jerking his thumb over at the group of people lurking in the shadows.
From here, I could see their glazed eyes and dazed expressions.
“I’ll show you where the bathroom is,” he said. Noticing my expression of doubt, he reassured me, “Don’t worry, I’m not high.”
He took my hand and helped me to the nearest girls’ bathroom.
“By the way, I’m Austin,” he said, leading me into the bathroom.
“Are you allowed in here?” I asked, noticing he was following me in.
“I’ve snuck in enough times,” he said with a shrug.
I decided to ignore that for now and proceeded to go pee.
When I got out, he was texting right under the “No phones or imaging devices” sign.
“You’d be prettier if you wore different colors. Black’s so depressing," he said flatly, not looking up from his phone.
I spun around on him. “It’s my style. Who are you to tell me what to do?”
“Just a suggestion,” he replied casually.
