Burnt
Back - By Hannah Smith
{"I'll be fine! Trust me! I can cope
with one puny day on my own!" I say to my father as he walks
out of the house for work. "I just want to know you'll be
safe, that's all!" I know he is just taking care of me,
but it's annoying that he doesn't think I can handle one
day by myself in the house. I roll my eyes, and he gets the
picture. "Fine. Bye, I love you! Be safe!" "Yes,
dad. Bye!" I say, shoving him out of the door as I shut it. I
come to the window and watch Dad get into the car and turn the
engine on. It's cold, though, and the engine needs warming up.
He notices me, and gallops to the other side of the window. He
waves madly and pulls a massive grin that makes me giggle quietly
in my silent home. Suddenly, my father's face changes. Instead
of grinning and waving, he now has a look of horror on his face and
he isn't looking at me anymore. He's looking at something
behind me. "GET OUT OF THERE!" My dad screams, banging
frantically on my window. But I don't move a muscle. I
can't. I'm frozen to the spot, afraid of what might happen
if I make the tiniest movement. Dad's still banging his fists
against the window, "FINLEY GET OUT OF THERE." He says,
still not making eye contact with me, but with something behind me.
Suddenly, his eyes move a bit to the left, and he stops banging.
The person behind me had moved. "Finley, listen to me. You
have to get out of there NOW. Go, run. Before he blocks your exit.
GO!" I quickly come back to Earth and realise what's
happening. I have to run. Get out of the house. Immediately. I turn
around, fast, unprepared for whatever I was about to see. Well, I
was certainly unprepared for this. I stop in my spot, and my father
has stopped talking and banging. There's no-one there. I turn
to my father, he looks even more confused than I am. He came round
to the door and bangs on it so that I will unlock it. I quickly
fumble around the key pot, and struggle to get the key into the
keyhole. My hands are still shaking. Finally, I unlock the door and
my father barges in. "Dad what are you-" I already know
what he was doing. "You're not staying here alone. I swear
to you, I'm not crazy. There was someone behind you. There is
someone in this house who managed to run away in the time it takes
for me to blink." I think about it for a long time. We
can't call the police, they still think this family is crazy
from the last time we called claiming there was a man in our house
who just disappeared in one millisecond. I blink.}
