"42." I heard someone
call.
I perked up and went to the counter to get my green tea.
I fought the crowded coffee shop to get outside, burning my
tounge on my beverage.
The sky was darkening, the sun was slowly slipping below the
horizon of small shops.
Murky windows beckoned like sunken eyes, colors were bleeding
into each other.
My phone rang, breaking me from my reverie.
"Mary! Where in Gods name are you!?" My mother
shrieked into the phone.
I juggled my purse, phone, tea, and boutique bag. "Mom,
chill out. I was at Belle's and then grabbed a tea at
Starbucks. I'm on my way home now. I'm gonna grab a cab,
my feet are killing me."
"NO! No cabs. You will walk. You know I don't trust
those things. You're 19, you're still a young woman.
Hurry and get home, babygirl."
She hung up and I tossed my phone into my Michael Kors bag. (50%
off at Macys!)
Ignoring her demands, I haled a taxi over. There was no way I
could walk another mile or so to the parking lot up town where
I'd left my car.
I took a seat in the back and handed the man 10$, pretty generous
for a 5 minute ride. "The lot up town."
He stuffed the money away and started around towards my
destination.
About a minute into the drive, we were stopped, flooded in
traffic. "Sorry ma'am." He spoke in clipped spanish
accented english. The sky was really getting dark now. 6 minutes
later I grew fed up.
"Let me out, keep the change." He unlocked his cab and
I grabbed my things, taking off down the sidewalk.
"Hey, sweet thaaang." I heard someone snicker at me. I
hugged my coat closer to my body and hurried my pace.
A huge wall loomed up to my left and in front. Did I take a wrong
turn?
I paused to looked away.
That would have been my first mistake.
