Outcasts
-Chapter Four-
-Shiloah-
We're running through the
woods at top speed. Amazingly, little Roane can keep up pretty
well. Eventually, we come to a tree with knots all over the
trunk. I grab one of the knots and swing myself up, climbing a
few feet. I look down at Kiev, "Let her climb
first."
Kiev glares at Roane, but lets her go. Then, he grumbles, loud
enough for us to hear. "You shouldn't have gone and
gotten her."
"Shut up, Kiev." I shout. He just looks at me. The
survivalist in him is ready to snap, to tell me to shut the hell
up. I glare, "Just stop, Kiev, please."
When we get high enough, I swing onto a thick branch of another
tree. I turn back and a reach a hand to Roane, who looks
tentative, scared. I pull hard, and she makes it to the branch
with me. Kiev swings himself to a lower branch. We go from tree
to tree like this until one appears with huge twisted roots that
rise up a few feet from the ground, leaving a gap underneath. I
turn to Roane, "That's our bed for the night."
We climb down the tree and we crawl under the roots. Kiev and I
curl up, close together as always. Roane looks at me. "Where
do I go?"
"Right here." I say. "It'll get cold
otherwise."
She doesn't argue. She just curls up and falls asleep.
