*Chapter Fifteen*
“Josh, this is
amazing!” I exclaimed, tears of joy pouring from our eyes.
“I can’t believe this! I thought I’d be blind
forever,” he admitted. Josh lifted himself from the
hospital bed where we were sitting and stood up onto the floor.
He grabbed my hands, gently pulling me off of the bed, then
lifted me and twirled me around, laughing. The doctor
must’ve heard our sudden joyful outbursts, because
momentarily, the doctor rushed into our room to find out what was
happening. The both of us turned to the door where Dr. Finch
stood. “Doctor, I don’t know how, but I can see
again!” The doctor looked into Josh’s eyes with
astonishment. “You’ve regained your vision?
I…I can’t believe this. This is wonderful!”
The doctor stated, more than satisfied. “Your parents have
been sitting in the waiting room for a few minutes; I was coming
up here to check if you were ready to see them yet.”
Without hesitation, Josh said, “Of course, I can’t
wait to finally see them.”
About two minutes later, Dr. Finch returned with both of
Josh’s parents, who greeted him with big hugs and happy
smiles. I stepped out of the room, deciding to give Josh and his
parents some alone time to catch up. For the next hour, I sat in
the hospital’s food court, drinking hot chocolate and
eating a glazed donut, browsing through the pictures on my phone.
I hadn’t noticed before that almost all of the pictures on
it were of Josh and I, making memories no matter where we went.
My favorite picture was of Josh pushing me on the swing at
Firestone Park. Almost every day after school this past year,
Josh and I would meet up at the park and just hangout and talk.
Whether it was a sunny summer day and a rainy morning, you could
always find us there. I glanced at the picture once more and
smiled before tucking my phone back into my pocket. Finishing up
the few last sips of my hot chocolate, I rose from my seat at one
of the small square tables and walked over to the trash bin to
throw away my coffee cup. What to do now, I wondered. I should
probably start heading back to Josh’s room. Before stepping
onto the elevator, I caught a glimpse of a very familiar face
down the hallway, but thought nothing of it. I pressed the button
in the elevator with the number 3 on it, and the elevator swiftly
transported me to his floor.
When I walked into the room, I was relieved to see that
Josh’s parents were no longer in there, and it was only the
two of us. “Good, you’re back,” he smiled.
“Remember the other night I told you there was something I
needed to tell you, but I wanted to see your face when I
did?” He asked. My memory flashed back to the other nights
conversation, and I nodded my head yes, while a smile stretched
across my face. Josh invited me to sit back down next to him on
the bed, so I did so. “Brielle,” he started, looking
into my eyes with his own. “You’ve always been there
fir me. I mean, we’ve been best friends since the
beginning. Your eyes sparkle brighter than all of Times Square.
And whenever I see you, I just-”
He stopped in the middle of his sentence, interrupted by the
sound of a click; a door opening. As our heads turned
simultaneously towards the doorway, I froze completely. Now
standing in the room with us, was the person I thought I’d
seen earlier down the one of the halls. A person I thought
we’d gotten rid of.
That person, was Jennifer Wilson.
