Something More
Than Friends

*Chapter Thirteen, Part Two*

I waited with Mr. and Mrs. Brady in the hotel’s waiting room on a small floral sofa for almost three hours. Eventually, Mrs. Brady had called my mom, explaining the whole situation. Both of my parents were a little upset that I took it upon myself to drive somewhere I’d never been before, but she understood why it was so important for me to go. Occasionally, one of the nurses would come to where we were waiting and give us reports on how the surgery was going. When we saw one of the doctors, dressed in sky blue scrubs, we expected to hear another non-informative report on Josh’s surgery. But this time, it was different news. “Hello there Mr. and Mrs. Brady, and family friend.” She greeted us. “I’m Brielle,” I introduced myself. “Nice to meet you Brielle. Have I got some news for you folks,” she started. “Josh just got out of his surgery about an hour ago, and is now back in his room resting. He appears to be awake, and the doctor seemed a bit leery about visitors, but decided to make an exception for the three of you.” “That’s great!” Josh’s parents said simultaneously. But before anyone could say anything else, I quickly said what had been on my mind for hours. “But how is he? Did the surgery work?” I questioned, waiting for a response. “The doctors said that all went well, and thankfully, the problem was caught just in time. Although, Josh will experience temporary vision loss for a maximum of twenty-four hours. He will be transferred back to your local hospital tomorrow morning.” We all let out a huge sigh of relief, so thankful that Josh would be okay. Rising from our seats, the woman in blue scrubs led us to Josh’s room on the third floor.

Stepping into his room, it was very different than seeing him for the first time in the other hospital. This time, Josh had more bandages wrapped around his head, and also over both of his eyes. The room was also a bit more comforting. “How’s my Joshy doing?” his mom spoke, loud enough for him to hear, approaching his elevated bed. “Mom?” He wondered aloud, glad to hear a familiar voice. “Is that you?” “And your father,” Mr. Brady included. “I’m so glad to…hear…you guys. The doctor said I’ll probably regain my vision by tomorrow.” “Hi Josh,” I spoke softly next to him, wanting to see if he could recognize my voice. “Oh, Bri!” He exclaimed, in disbelief. “You’re actually here. I told you not to worry!” “I’m sorry, Josh, I just needed to see you so badly. I had to know you’d be okay,” I confessed. His parents stepped out of the room for a moment, giving us some time to talk things through. “Oh, Brielle,” he spoke. “It means so much to me that you would come all the way down here just for me. How did you even get here? Did you come with my parents?” “I got a new car this morning,” I chuckled. “I can’t wait for you to see it.” “I bet it tops mine,” he laughed. Josh’s parents walked back in and told him they were going to head home. They hugged and kissed him goodbye, then left the room. I figured I would follow them out to my own car and leave as well, but then Josh called me to come closer. “Brielle, I need to tell you something.” “Yes, Josh?” I asked anxiously, smiling, even though he couldn’t see it. “Well, I need to tell you something, but I want to see your face when I see it,” He admitted. “Well, you could always tell me when you come home,” I suggested. “Of course I will.” He swore. “You know, I can’t see you right now, but I bet you look beautiful,” he confessed. I gave him a light hug and a soft kiss on his cheek, then whispered, “I’ll see you tomorrow Josh.” Then, that loving smile spread across his face. One I hadn’t seen in a long time. “And tomorrow, Brielle, I’ll see you, too.” <3
