CHAPTER

My new room, the one on the
right side of the hallway, was huge, empty, open,
intimidating. There was so much space to fill, and with only
one suitcase, not enough to fill it with.
The only things in my room before i started unpacking were a
bed, complete with a black comforter and pillows of assorted
colors, a light pink, walk in closet, probably bigger than
the average bedroom, and a white dresser, almost blending in
with the plain white walls surrounding me.
Setting my duffel on my bed i opened it, dumping everything
out onto the floor before getting to work. I organized
everything into categories, placing all of my shirts in the
first two dresser drawers, pants in the third and fourth,
hanging my dresses in the closet along with my sweatshirts,
and stuffing my pajamas in the bottom of my dresser, dumping
my toiletries in random drawers in the bathroom, one i
wouldn’t have to share with Holly, attached to my room
by a parlor door.
Stopping in the bathroom to check my reflection, i studied
myself under the florescent lights. My sandy blonde hair was
pulled back into a bun, and strands of hair were hanging
loosely in front of my face, but it wasn’t worth
fixing. My sunny yellow tank top stood out in comparison to
my tan skin, making me look darker than i was, and my black
Nike running shorts were a little too loose, but i was too
comfortable to care.
The ceiling-high windows in my room gave me a perfect view of
the ocean, and the beach leading up to it. I unlatched the
windows, sliding them up and taking out the screen, feeling
the ocean breeze hit my face as i climbed out of the window
and onto the small strip of roof attached to the back of the
house, shielding the porch underneath me from any chance of
rain. Sitting outside, leaning back on the side of the house,
i watched the waves repeatedly hit the shore, slinking back,
only to attack again.
I heard a chorus of laughs echo off of the surrounding
houses, and craned my neck to see who made the noise. There
were a group of boys and girls on the beach, playing sand
volleyball, that seemed to be about our age.
“Hey, Hannah, hows it going?” I heard Holly
approach from behind me, sticking her head out of the window
to see me. She didn’t look surprised to see me out
here.
“There are some people playing volleyball out on the
beach that look our age,” i told her, not answering her
question, but telling her something that i knew would
interest her more. I scooted over, making room for Holly who
was now climbing out of the window behind me, probably to get
a better look at the volleyball players.
“let’s go introduce ourselves” she told me,
ducking her head as she stepped back into my room, motioning
for me to follow her. When my feet hit the carpet again, i
slid the screen back in the window, closing it before i
walked out of the room, down the stairs and outside, trying
to keep up with Holly who was eager with the chance of
meeting someone new.
