CHAPTER

When my feet hit the
freezing cold wooden floor in my room i cringed, quickly
stepping onto the bright purple rug close to my bed. Pulling
a huge duffel bag out of my closet and setting it on my
mattress, i began packing, a task that would take me a whole
hour.
Ten shirts, seven pairs of shorts, three pairs of jeans,
three pairs of sweatpants, six tank tops, five pairs of
shoes, and an astonishing amount of toiletries later, my bag
was packed and sloppily placed on the floor in front of my
door, waiting for morning.
I layed down in bed, the one i wouldn’t sleep in again
for three months after tonight, and curled up in my blankets,
forcing my eyes closed. The clock on my nightstand was
blinking 11:38, way later than i usually went to sleep. I
rolled over onto my side, thoughts of the beach house
cluttering my head.
this summer would definitely be an interesting one.

“Ew, Hannah, look at this place! I am not eating
here,” Holly whined, examining the greasy tables and
stained floors of Pete’s Burgers, a tacky roadside
diner we had come across, the only one for miles on either
side.
“well you can starve, then” i told her, walking
up to the counter to make my order, “because this is
the only stop we’re making.” glancing over the
menu and realizing that nothing looked appetizing, i ordered
a diet coke and some french fries, taking them back to the
car.
The two of us sat in the car for a while, silently eating our
small lunch, not knowing what to say. silence was uncommon
for us, but i didn’t mind it. we would be spending the
whole summer together, practically every second, so i figured
that the silence was a good thing.

“Oh my god, finally.” Holly groaned, opening the
door of our yellow jeep and practically falling out. I pulled
the keys out of the ignition, walking to the back of the car
to unload all of our bags.
“wow, this place is actually pretty nice,” my
sister stated, carrying her suitcases to the front door and
unlocking it with the key that our parents had given us this
morning, before we left.
I glanced around our surroundings, realizing how different
the landscape was from what i was used to. The sand around
the driveway was hot on my bare feet, and the
nine-o’clock sun was still blazing.
“get in here, Hannah!” a voice called from inside
the house. i sped up, half jogging down the sidewalk leading
to our front door, eager to see my summer home.
