9 Inisghts on life #7
All
people operate from the same two motivations: to fulfil their
desires and to escape their suffering.
Learning this allowed me to finally make sense of how people
can hurt each other so badly. The best explanation I had before
this was that some people are just bad. What a cop-out. No
matter what kind of behaviour other people exhibit, they are
acting in the most effective way they are capable of (at that
moment) to fulfill a desire or to relieve their suffering.
These are motives we can all understand; we only vary in
method, and the methods each of us has at our disposal depend
on our upbringing and our experiences in life, as well as our
state of consciousness. Some methods are skilful and helpful to
others, others are unskilful and destructive, and almost all
destructive behaviour is unconscious. So there is no good and
evil, only smart and dumb (or wise and foolish.) Understanding
this completely shook my long-held notions of morality and
justice.
One of the ways that we act to end our suffering also ends
everything else. Suicide.
A way we act to get what we want, take it, with out
permission.
Steal it.
Both ways ruin relationships.
Both also they both involve lying.
To steal we have to lie about stealing it and also we most
likely have to lie to get into the situation in the first
place.
For suicide, we lie to the people around us insted of telling
them how we feel.
We attempt and succed in lying to them in the ultimit way by
acting nice and happy, when in reality we are falling appart
inside.
