Something
Wicked
Chapter
One:
I knew
I was dreaming.
Everything had that dream-like quality you
get when you're asleep. I looked around to take
in my surroundings. Central Park.
I'm in Central Park, in the city that never sleeps,
and yet, I'm utterly and completely alone.
The hum and buzz of traffic that usually fills the
air of New York City is replaced by an
empty silence.
Something isn't right and I know I should be afraid.
The hair on the backof my neck began to rise.
I need to escape the darkness. I searched for the
nearest street lamp and started toward it.
I had the sneaking suspicion
I wasn't alone. My eyes flitted from side to side
but there was nothing to see. I was alone.
I was about halfway when a figure emerged
from the shadows. I stopped abruptly.
I could immediately tell upon first
inspection the figure was a young man.
His blue-black hair shining from the
distant street lamp.
It was dark and I could just barely
make out his features. I didn't think I'd ever met
him,
but something about his face was familiar.
His lips quirked up in a half smile.
"Hello Avery. How nice to see
you again."
His voice was beautiful. The
sound of
it made me dizzy.
"Do I know
you?"
The question escaped my lips
before I could stop it.
I mentally cursed myself for speaking to a complete stranger.
Hadn't my parents always been most strict about
that?
Then again, it was just a dream...I should ignore him and walk
away...despite how alluring his voice was.
I tried to discreetly creep toward the lamp,
but he took a step forward and blocked my path.
I looked up into his eyes in panic and froze. I immediately
realized what was so familiar about his face. His eyes.
They were the same pale gray as mine were. So pale they appeared
drained of all color. I'd never met anyone with eyes
like mine. Not even my parents, whose eyes were brown. My eyes
were what set me apart from everyone else. His smirk got even
bigger as he saw the recognition in my eyes.
He took another step foward until he towered right over me. He
leaned down until his lips were right next to my ear. I shivered
at his closeness.
"You're mine you know,"
he whispered.
"You always have been."
Opening my eyes,
I glanced at my alarm clock. It was four in the morning.
Officially my seventeenth birthday. I rolled over and
stared at the ceiling trying to remember the dream I'd just
had. But already the last remnants of it were fading. Thinking
about it was starting to give me a headache so I closed my eyes
and drifted back into
unconciousness.
