Torn
Chapter 28
We continued our walk from there without any major other
disturbances. After our talk with Trick and Sabrina, we
went to a fancy, unpronounceable, Italian restaurant for a late
dinner. I got to eat whatever I wanted because I was
pregnant and for nine months I didn't have to watch my
weight, so I got a penne pasta with special Italian sauce and
Tyler got a calzone with cheese and mushrooms.
"So how are you feeling?" Ty asked me after our bread
was brought out to us.
I dipped my bread in the olive oil as I thought about my
answer. "I feel fine," I decided on, not quite
meeting his eyes. I focused on the bread I was rolling
around my in my hand.
"How are you really?"
"Pregnant. I don't know how else to describe
it."
"I'm sorry sweetie," he said softly, not looking up
either.
"It's not like it's your fault."
"Yeah it is."
I stopped talking and just focused on my hands again. I
didn't really have a reply for that right now, because I kind
of agreed with him. I didn't blame him, but I
just wasn't in the best mood, and it was easier to blame him
than it was to just deal with it.
He noticed my silence and looked up with a sad look on his face.
"I'm sorry."
"I'm not upset with you, you don't have to
apologize."
Then the main course got there, so we stopped talking and ate in
silence for a little bit. Until I decided to break it, "How
are you feeling?"
"How do you think, Hay?" he asked, using his cute
nickname for me, but ruining it with the sadness in his
eyes.
"I think you don't need to be so hard on yourself.
This isn't a bad thing, it's a good thing. I'm
not upset about it. I get to eat whatever I want for nine
months!" To underline this fact and to break the tension
between us, I pinched a piece of pasta and dropped it into my
mouth from a pretty great height and made a slurping noise.
He cracked a smile, but the second that I threw him the dramatic,
little kid smile that I always did when I was trying to be cute,
he busted out laughing, which made me start laughing too, and
soon we were both doubled over with tears rolling down our
faces.
After a couple minutes we sobered up and got back to our
meal. Some people were staring at us, and I thought it was
just because of the scene we were causing until a little girl
came up to us and asked to have her picture taken with us.
Then we realized that we had just been recognized by our little
show we had just put on. We took a couple pictures, signed
a couple of autographs, and then we high-tailed it out of
there. We ran down a couple of blocks until we were sure no
one was following us.
We turned a corner into a back alleyway and started laughing
again. After we stopped laughing we walked back to the
hotel. On the way back, however, it started raining.
Tyler took off the old gray hoodie he was wearing, flipped his
baseball cap so it was facing forward, and lifted me up, covering
me with the hoodie. He started running back to the hotel
and I laughed, feeling like a five year old while I peeked out
from under the hoodie. We got back and he tried to put me
down, but I grabbed his neck and snuggled closer to him.
"I love you" I whispered before I kissed him on the
cheek and hopped down. We walked hand in hand down to the
elevator and then got in with a young couple and a family with
small children. The kids looked half asleep and everyone
else looked dead on their feet. I looked at the clock on my
phone. It was already almost ten at night, I'm sure
that the family was anxious for us to be home. We snuck in
the door quietly because the lights were all
out.
