He could've either said maybe to make her stop asking him, or he wanted to put you in suspense. Or he came out and was truthful and it means he does like you. It really depends on how he said it. At least that is what I think. I may be wrong.

he may like you but not in the way u want him to. just see if he says anything else and see how it turns out :)
