23:PART 1
Bees hummed in and out of the pennyroyal. I inhaled its
minty smell and continued on, delighting in the sound of my feet
sliding through the leaves.
"So, do you know which direction we're going off
to?" I asked, there was the slightest hint in my voice, that we
weren't heading to a right place.
The light was fading, creating new shadows and dark patches
around me. Eyes glimmered from tree hollows. The wind wailed
between distorted trunks, carrying the sickly stink of wood
rot.
I moved faster to catch up with Dylan, ignoring the briars that
caught at my jeans, the damp leaves that grimed my skin; my lips
were murmuring a soft prayer, to safely get us home.
Dylan was cautiously moving; his leg work was so swift and quick,
delicate but strong. He was making a path through the jungle-like
forest, to get us home, quickly. “Be careful, there could
be anything dangerous- this is a forest; there could be wild
foxes, wolves or even bears,” He stopped. “I
don’t know much about this forest, but it looks pretty
old,” Another pause. “We have to make sure we
don’t separate; always keep beside me,” He was being
uptight, there was a sort of worried tone in his voice, it was
reaching out to me. He cared for me.
I lifted my face, letting the light and shadow dance across my
skin. “Dylan, I’m not sure this is the righ-“ I
paused, and then stopped moving, there was a strange noise coming
from behind us. Dylan must’ve heard the strange loud racket
as well, because he also stopped.
He quietly placed his index finger over his lips, motioning me to
be quiet. “Don’t say anything,” He whispered
softly, under his breath. And then he walked away from me, to the
empty desert, with nothing but trees and bushes in sight.
“Nothing, there is nothing here,” He said,
frustrated. "Then what was that noise about?" He muttered under
his breath and then slowly came back towards me, not knowing of
the creature behind him. A
bear.
