Rescue Me

Chapter 17
Zayn's POV

"Desperately." I sang my echo on 'What Makes You Beautiful' and I started thinking of N.  I haven't seen her in a week, haven't seen her beautiful smile, haven't seen her long eyelashes that made her gray eyes more beautiful.  Just then the song ended, and Steve started talking, asking us questions, but only one caught my attention.

"So, you boys have been seen with our little town star lately.  It's been on the gossip channels of the radio and t.v. and apparently a picture made it into a few magazines." he finished looking at me.  "I'm the only one who knows her name, so don't say it okay?" Louis told the radio host.  "Really!?  Why's that?" he asked and the boys turned to me.  "Well, when we arrived at the, err, airport, we were escorted away from the fans and into a less crowded area.  She came up and was telling one of her friends - who's a security guard - that she lost her sister, he went to find her and asked someone to sit with her.  No one said anything so I said I would, and when I walked over she told me she didn't need a babysitter, then realized it was me.  She was like 'Oh my Gosh you're Zayn Malik.  We were talking for a little and then I asked for her name and she was like 'Well, I guessed your name, so you guess mine.' and then we had to leave.  The only hint she gave me was that it started with an 'N' so we just call her that." I shrugged.

"That's not how it happened at all!" I heard the familiar voice and a pair of arms wrapped around my neck.  "Really?" I asked sarcastically, turning to look at her.  "Nah, it actually happened exactly like that." she laughed and gave the other boys hugs.  "Ladies and gentlemen, listeners of all ages, lets welcome -"  "N." she cut him off, "They don't know my name remember?"  "That's right." Steve laughed, "So are you gonna sing us your latest cover of 'Safe and Sound'?"  "Umm, nah, I'll sing but then I have an announcement.  So, can you play this song?" she handed him a flashdrive and he did as she asked.  A guitar started to play and she sang a song I didn't know.

At the end of the song everyone started clapping.  "Amazing as always, now what's that announcement?"  "Okay, so umm, I think it's been pretty obvious that I've been hanging out with the 1D Boys lately, but we're friends, just friends.  I'm a lot closer to Zayn I think because I was talking to him first.  And Liam was just being an amazing friend when he picked me up to get me out of the mob.  So for all of those girls that have been outside lately trying to kill me, please stop." she laughed, smiling and I looked over at Liam, he just shrugged.  "Alright babe.  Now that I just thought of it, do you guys call her anything else, cause I think it would be pretty annoying to just call her N."  "Umm," Liam started, "no, we call her N, babe, cutie like all of those kinds of names," I looked over at her and wiggled my eyes brows, making her laugh, "and ever since last week we started calling her baby."  the boys were smiling more.  "Why since last week?"  "Liam started it." Niall said and we looked at Liam again.  "Well, last week when I picked her up she was crying and she just kinda turned away from the cameras and cried into me.  I realized she seemed so helpless, like a baby.  Then we were all helping, trying to make her happy again, and then she had cuts on her legs, and when she tried to wash herself off she ended up hurting herself.  So I just kinda helped her and I kept calling her baby, then everyone did, so it kinda stuck." he smiled and looked over at her and she was smiling a bittersweet smile.  "I don't know about you guys, but I just call her woman." Harry said, lightening the mood and she leaned on him, laughing her cute little laugh.

After Steve asked a couple of more questions we left, goofing off all the way outside.  When we got outside, there was a black jeep with a guy waiting in the drivers seat.  The door slammed and he turned the music down to look at us, "Hey cutie." he smiled and N yelled back, "What are you doing here?"  "You're mom called Juli to pick you up because she heard you on the radio, she was with Chase and I said I would come.  So get your little but in the car." he smiled and she laughed.  I looked over at Liam again and he shrugged again.  Niall, Harry and Louis were all staring at the guy.  She stood there and Niall - talking loud enough so we could hear, but quiet enough so the guy couldn't - said, "How about you come hang out with us, or we can drive you home." she turned to him and smiled.  "Yeah, I'd rather do that." she turned back, "I was just gonna hangout with these guys."  "Nah, babe, come here real quick." she groaned.  "I'll be right back."  "Want me to come with you?" Niall asked,  "Yeah, could you?" and they started walking over to the jeep.

"Ugh." I finally let out a groan.  "What man?" Louis asked.  "She said friends."  "So, you're Zayn, you can change that." Harry said laughing, but it wasn't funny.  "But not friends, she said just friends.  What if that's all she wants?" I turned to look at her again and she looked back and smiled that beautiful smile at me.  And then I whispered, "Just friends."
