Zoe; Chapter Twenty-Seven
We were on the beach, Trevor
and I. Our feet were totally submerged in cool sand. The sun
was setting, creating a beautiful blend of colors in the sky.
It was perfect to say the least. Then Trevor turned his head
and caught my attention. He tipped his head to the side a bit,
leaned in, and…
That’s when I woke up.
I glanced at my clock in bewilderment. It read
“3:15” in obnoxiously red letters.
“Ugh.” My voice was groggy and not at all
attractive.
I reached for my brand new iPhone in the darkness. No
messages, from anyone. Not even from Scarlett, who was bound to
know about Trevor and me by now. I had Phoebe to thank for that
one.
My fingers raced across the screen, typing what seemed like
jibberish at the time. My mind was clouded and my thoughts were
scrambled. I suppose that’s what less than two
hours of sleep does to you. After composing what looked like a
sensible rant, I pressed ‘Send’ with a feeling of
accomplishment. I had addressed the text to Phoebe, and it
basically said that I didn’t give a crap; Trevor and I
were together whether she liked it or not. I slept peacefully
after that.
“Zoe!” An arm laced around my shoulder. The
familiar voice gave me butterflies.
“Hey, Trevor.” I had asked him to meet me here at
Carla’s.
“What’s up? You uh, wanted to talk to me about
something…” He took a seat next to me at a
checkered picnic table. Those hazel eyes looked at me
intently.
“Yeah.” I reached for a strand of my red hair
before continuing; I twirl it when I’m nervous.
“I just, I wanted to know… what… what are
we?” I stuttered and stumbled over words before finishing
the sentence. I was mortified, and as a result, twirled the
strand of hair over and over again until it was no longer
straight.
There was no reply for a very, very long time. To be honest,
I’m not very sure that Trevor knew what we were either. A
couple? No, no. Too formal. Friends with benefits?
Now that just made me sound slutty.
“We can be whatever you want us to be,” Trevor said
after long contemplation. I could tell he was proud of his
answer because as soon as he said it, he grinned.
“You… you don’t miss her at all?” I
wanted Trevor to myself, I did, but it surprised me that he
didn’t bring up Scarlett.
Trevor’s cheeky grin disappeared as quickly as it had
come, and a frown replaced it. I had touched upon a sore
subject. I wanted to apologize, but I knew that would only make
things worse.
“Of course I miss her.” His voice was suddenly
hoarse, like someone had just punched him in the stomach.
“But she’s with some guy in New York. She’s
not worth it anymore.”
Despite his efforts to hide it, Trevor was
heartbroken.
