Escape chapter  15

I felt my eyelids droop; we’d been driving for about an hour. It didn’t seem like we were getting anywhere.

The car slowed down to a complete halt and my mind sharpened.

Were we there yet?

“That’ll be £38.62” the driver told me as he pressed a button on his dashboard.

I dug into the side of my pocket and handed him a £50 note, I didn’t have enough time to get the change because it was so dark- I wanted to use what little light was left to get to Shefton.

I jumped out, closed the door behind me and started jogging down the path, letting the car headlights show me where the dust track ended and bush started.

My legs were stiffening with every step thanks to the cold gnawing at them.

I knew I was further north than London but, dear God it was much colder here. The taxi driver reversed then did a U-turn, leaving me by myself.

Alone in the Wild.

I stopped jogging and let my eyes adjust to the dark, the trees and bushes turned black and the night sky started to brighten up.

I started jogging again, hoping that the map in my head was correct.

If it wasn’t then I might as well have been ready cooked for the foxes out there.
