If he really liked you, he wouldn't care if you were a sophomore but maybe he's a bit shy? Or just.. um, I don't know. Maybe he's too shy to go out with you when you're still a sophomore?

Try being friends with him though! it may help a lot when you're in high school and he 'approves' of you two dating. :)
