Zoe; Chapter
Twenty-One
“Hey.” I sheepishly entered
Phoebe’s room. She was relaxing in her bed, wincing
whenever she had to move a muscle. Upon seeing this, I felt
extreme pity. I scanned her for a moment. Her extensive
wounds were showing improvement.
“Hey!” Her expression lit up the room, despite her
pain. “Come sit.” She grinned and motioned for me to sit
next to her. I did. Despite our time spent away from each
other, awkwardness was not present. I was comfortable around
Phoebe.
Phoebe pushed me playfully. “So, this Trevor
kid…”
I stopped her mid sentence. “Oh god, don’t tell me
you’re on Scar’s side. The girl is probably
living it up in New York right now… Getting with guys. And
Trevor is here in Florida, without a clue. He deserves better,
I’m telling you.” I shook my head furiously,
disgusted.
“I’m not on anyone’s side, Zoe. And maybe she
is. But then again, she might not be.” Phoebe lifted a casted arm
and rested it on my shoulder. The action was simple, but it
did not fail to calm me.
I let out a heavy sigh. I hated when she was right. Nevertheless,
Phoebe was the person who kept my head screwed on straight, and I
was eternally grateful for her.
I wasn’t going to let this go anytime soon. “Can you
believe they just left us like that, though?!” I slammed my
fists down on her bed.
Phoebe shrugged. “I can, actually.” She
inspected her stitches nonchalantly. “Nemma never liked me,
and Scarlett is her best friend. You can put two and two
together.”
I suppose I could have. I just never wanted to.
Phoebe eventually had to leave for physical therapy, which meant
I had to go home. I said goodbye to her and Ms. Wilkes.
Phoebe whispered this in my ear as I was walking out the
door:
“And don’t you dare get any ideas, Zoe. Trevor and
Scar are together, whether you like it or not. You
won’t go anywhere near him, you got it?” She spoke to
me in the same tone my mother did.
The sun was just about to set. I was sitting on my house’s
porch, a can of soda in hand. I was busy wondering what Scarlett
and Nemma
could have been doing when someone called my name.
“Zoe! Hey, you’re Zoe right?” The person came
towards my house. I couldn’t make out who they were until
they were standing on my front steps. That unmistakable
crooked smile gave it away. Trevor.
“Listen, this is going to sound so stupid, but I was
jogging down your street when I saw you. I pulled you out
of the water that one day at beach, and I just wanted to make
sure you were okay. I’m Trevor, by the
way.”
“Oh yeah!” I said, attempting to be surprised.
“Thanks so much for that. Seriously, I cannot thank you
enough.” I grinned. “I’m fine
though. Yup, you’re Scar’s boyfriend.” I
tried my hardest not to get jealous when I said that last part.
If I did, it would most certainly show.
