Casey was looking at the swing set as if
something interesting was happening to it. I just kept my
eyes down, this was too awkward. I broke the silence,
"I'm sorry about-"
"If you're apologizing for Jake
making fun of me, really, you shouldn't. I should be
the one saying sorry." He's never interrupted me
before. Actually we haven't talked in a few weeks, but
I still felt he was too shy to butt into the middle of my
sentence.
"Why would you apologize to me for Jake making
fun of you?" I knew the answer, but I didn't have
a clue what to say next.
"Because I know he poked fun at you, too.
Whenever he got the chance, he'd take my phone and
obsessively text you."
"So that's why I got three texts a day
asking if I'd like to date you," I smiled at him
and we laughed together. I could feel him loosening up to
me. Which was awesome, because it showed I was one
step closer to figuring out who he really is. Also, I was
super nervous- believe it or not. Even though he was the
one with the famous crush on me, I felt tense around him
and I was trying to figure out if i like him or
not.
From our view at the park bench, I could see no
further than the hill. So I just stared at it when the
laughter died down and it became quiet again. I heard
faint laughing coming from the other side of the
hill and figured Jake and his girlfriend, Ava, were coming
back to the park for us. I kept my eyes fixed on the hill
until I saw two silhouettes belonging to Ava and Jake.
Before I knew it, my mouth was
against Casey's. It felt incredibly good, besides
the fact that it nearly gave me a heart attack. Casey put
his hand on my face and I didn't know what to do so I
pulled away, even though I knew I'd wanted
this. When me and Casey were no longer kissing I
noticed Jake and Ava leaning against the swing set.
Fabulous. I had an audience for my first kiss. Jake was
quietly laughing and Ava was smiling, at us, i
suspected.
I gazed at Casey, who was now looking down, kicking
wood chips. After awhile he said, "Common, Jake.
Let's walk them home." I lived a couple blocks
from here and Ava lived two doors down from me. It's
pretty convenient that we all live in the same giant
neighborhood with the rest of our middle school. He
was still looking to the ground when he got up. I gave a
quick glance at Ava who was whispering to Jake and stood up
to follow Casey.
When we started walking side-by-side he grabbed my
hand. An electric wave spread through me and I couldn't
help but smile. Ava and Jake walked behind us at a slow
pace. I could feel their eyes on me.
I meant to say something like, "Casey, thanks
for taking me home," but once I opened my mouth my
stupidity did the talking. I heard myself say, "Why
did you kiss me?"
I'm an idiot. I can't believe I just said
that. I look at Casey searching for emotional clues in his
face. He answered , "I dunno.
Sorry," he gently let go of my hand. I was still
looking at his face when I heard the thump of his
hand hit his side.
I reached for his hand and said, "Don't
be." And before my mind processed what I was doing, my
lips were once again pressed against his.
This time he pulled away first and let go of my
hand. At first I thought he was mad that I kissed him, but
then he smiled and wrapped his arm around me. I'd never
seen him this confident, and it was definitely sexy.
Casey stopped walking suddenly and asked me the
question that officially made my night perfect. "Date
me?" He smiled raising his left eyebrow and turning
his head.
I had the biggest smile on my face when I replied,
"I'd love to."
