however he told me was completely done with her and wants

Are you friends with her? Becuase if you are then maybe you should talk to her first. If you arent friends with her, go for it! He clearly doesnt like her and wants a new girlfriend. You wont be interfering because it seems like she doesnt have a chance (not to be mean.) So id say you should go for it. :)
