Life
Goes On
Part 10
Matt doesn’t usually make much conversation with us when he
picks us up, but he must’ve felt some serious tension in
the silent car, because he spoke up, “So, what happened at
school?” When Sam didn’t say anything and
continued looking out the window, I said, louder than necessary,
“Oh, nothing. Just aggravating friends that can’t
seem to be happy for me, or even give me support seem to be on my
back today.” Sam snapped his head away from the window and
quickly jumped in, “Oh, and MY friend doesn’t trust
my judgment and said yes to a scumbag that asked her out on a
date, and she didn’t even have the decency to ask me what I
thought of the situation the last three
words.
Matt
opened his mouth to say something but I interrupted him.
“Yeah,” I said, my voice rising, “Only guess
what? My friend doesn’t own me, thank you very much! I can
do whatever I want to! And another thing--who said I have to get
permission from my best friend when I want to have a date?!
It’s absurd! Society these days is so degrading; I mean,
woman can’t make any of the choices themselves, can
the--” “Okay, okay,” Matt cut in. “I
think that’s enough.” he continued, cranking up the
volume of the radio. Poor Matt. Just trying to make an
effort to be a good brother, but SOMEONE had to ruin it. I could
see his facial expression-it said ‘kids sure are lunatics
nowadays.’
When
Matt dropped us off in front of my house, I slammed the car door
and didn’t wait up for Sam. I stormed into the
kitchen, where I got a bag of chips. Sam was walking in
slowly after me. I spun around to face him, ready to get
defensive if at all needed. But Sam’s hands were up; he was
surrendering in defeat. “Fine. You win. Just go out with
him Nikki. As long as you’re happy.” I tried
not to let the surprise show on my face. I cleared my throat.
“Well. Thank you for…understanding.” I said,
trying to keep a straight face. But then I cracked a smile and
giddily skipped over to Sam, wrapping my arms around his neck.
“I love you, Sammy-boo. You’re the best friend a girl
could ever have.” Sam’s arms locked around my waist
too and I breathed in his scent of Axe. I sighed happily and
pulled away to see Sam smiling slightly. “I can never stay
mad at you, dude.” he mumbled, looking down to hide his
smile.
