My mind spun back to my
bedroom. There were so many memories which remained in this
house, but over the years it had become too much. I am now
15. Mum works three jobs but we can no longer keep up with
all of the expenses to maintain the house. We had scraped all
of the funds we had to keep the house for as long as we could
but now it was just not possible anymore.
“Melanie!” my mum yelled from the bottom of the
staircase, “It’s time to go visit dad.”
We got in the car and drove for an hour to the Graceville
Cemetery. I hesitated before opening the car door as it had
been some time since I last visited. I cradled the bouquet of
orange tulips and card against my chest and trudged towards
my dad’s headstone. I knelt to the ground and laid them
both down leaning against his grave where small white flowers
grew encircling the polished stone. I sat there for a while
and told my dad all of the wonderful things that had been
happening in my life. I hadn’t realised that my
mother-Linda- had squatted behind me and was watching
quietly. I turned and as she held my gaze emotions swirled
through us and a single tear rolled down my cheek and she
leaned forward to wipe it away. We must have sat there for
hours without talking before mum sighed and pushed herself
off the ground and started to walk back towards the
car.
