Destructive: Chapter Seven
♥
The next morning, I awoke and saw the untouched
knife on my dresser. It was clean and shiny, unused. This was
surprising, especially for someone like me. I knew it was because
of Taylor. Knowing that he cared so much about me was like a
blanket of security… and it felt nice. Being with him
banished all my feelings of being unwanted and unloved. When you
look at it from my perspective, it was almost magical! I could
barely believe my eyes, as I stared at my wrists, which had finally
gone untouched for a full 24 hours. For this reason, I had been
able to straighten my hair, put on some makeup, and head out the
door in time to stop by at Stephanie’s house for
breakfast.
When I approached her doorsteps, I could hear
music playing from the kitchen. I knocked on the door, Mrs.
Johnson, Stephanie's mother, danced out of the kitchen, down
the long hall, and opened the door for me, all while wearing bunny
slippers. “Well hey there, sweetie!” She greeted me
with a hug. She took my backpack, set it down on the floor and led
me into the kitchen. “I’ve got blueberry, chocolate
chip, and plain pancakes. Then there’s bagels and cream
cheese, or strawberries with whipped cream. Help yourself, darling!
Steph’ll be down in a sec.” Mrs. Jones stated loudly as
she headed up the stairs to her Stephanie’s older
brother’s bedroom. “Wake up, Dean!” She shouted
as she knocked loudly on his door. “You too, Steph! Jane is
here already!” In a matter of minutes, Dean was downstairs
and dressed. “Yo, Jay Jay,” he greeted me casually as
he plopped just about every kind of food in sight onto his plate. I
laughed, and greeted him back. “Jeez, Dean, you’ve got
so much food on your plate that Jay is going to think we starve you
poor kids!” Stephanie’s mother said as she entered the
kitchen again, this time wearing a perfectly clean and well
put-together outfit. I jokingly rolled my eyes along with Mrs.
Johnson and sighed, “Teenage boys. What are we going to do
with you, Dean?” Then right on cue, Stephanie skipped down
the stairs, grabbed a few strawberries off of my plateful of food,
and gave me a hug. “Hello, darlin’” we greeted
each other simultaneously. “Momma, we’re headin’
out!” she called into the kitchen as she grabbed Dean’s
elbow and dragged him out the door along with us. As we marched
down the hall together, Mrs. Johnson called, “Have an
enchanting day, lovelies! You too, Jane!” The Johnson’s
house always seemed extremely lively and inviting, no matter what
day of the week it was. Whether it was a Monday morning, a Friday
night, or Sunday at 1:00am, I was always welcome there. Her family
was my family, and her home was my home. Of course I would love for
it to be the same way for her, but anyone who came over my house
usually never came over again… So I’d warned her the
first time she stopped by, and, as usual, we both agreed that it
would be best to see each other at her house rather than
mine.
