Destructive: Chapter Two
♥
When I awoke, I could hear Anna and Dan in the basement, doing
things I probably shouldn't know about. I cautiously sat up,
trying not to make too much noise. My joints cracked, and my
muscles ached. But I carried on with my morning routine as usual. I
washed my face and hands with cold water, brushed and straightened
my hair, put on a clean shirt and jeans, slipped on my fuzzy boots,
and shuffled downstairs. Much to my surprise, on the kitchen table
sat a fresh pop tart and full glass of milk. On the top sat a note,
with the words, "To Jane, From Dan. Have a nice day!"
scribbled in a man's messy scrawl. His act of generosity
shocked me, but I ate the whole thing and quickly drank the glass
of milk anyway. Just before the bus came, I had the time to slip a
thank you note into his briefcase. Mrs. Crane greeted me as
usual, and so did the girls my age who had saved me a seat. But
today, a girl named Stephanie spoke to me when I sat down next to
her. She was really nice, and had never said a mean word to me or
anyone else for that matter. She had golden brown eyes, porcelain
skin, and long, straight, black hair to frame her face. Stephanie
flipped her hair behind her shoulders, smiled, and asked,
"Jane, are you going to homecoming this year?" I
wasn't sure when it was, so I simply answered, "Nah, I
don't think so." Her face lit up. "Oh, well do you
want to come with Beth and me? We can get ready at my house.
It’ll be fun!" I smiled and thought, why not? It’s
a brand new year. "Sure! That would be fun." I admitted,
not comprehending what I was saying. She clapped her hands happily.
"Good! Bring lots of clothes so we can help pick your
outfit." We continued to chat idly like that for the rest of
the bus ride, and we talked about frivolous things during homeroom.
But we stopped speaking when we got to first period science,
because when I got there, Taylor was smiling and waiting at my desk
for me.
I waved goodbye to Stephanie, and briskly walked over to where he
was standing. To my surprise, he hugged me and said, “Hi
Jane,” grinning ear to ear. I smiled back, stifled a happy
giggle, and greeted him warmly. “What’s your next
class? I don’t think we have any others together.” he
said sadly. I frowned, “I don’t think so either. My
next class is History, with Mr. Higgins. Then it’s AP
English, and after that I have Algebra I.” He looked down,
then smiled and looked hopefully into my eyes. “Wanna sit
with me and my guys at lunch? You do have sixth lunch…
right?” For a long, strange, moment, my mind went blank as he
stared at me. His eyes bore into mine with a friendly sparkle. I
blinked, shook my head, smiled back at him and confirmed,
“Yeah, that’d be cool. Thanks.” The bell rang, so
we took our seats. The teacher babbled on about volcanoes and the
history of blah, blah, blah. I wasn’t actually paying
attention to her, I was watching Taylor. It became a regular
routine of mine, and it would only be a matter of time before my
grades plummeted. Regardless, we became a normal pair of friends
you’d pass in the hallway. For a while, we had to try and
ignore curious stares, but after about a week or so, people stopped
caring.
