If I
Die Young; Part Nine
[End]
Eli's Point of View, 20 years later (age 33)
I came home from my job, as an IT
manager at a computer company. I got out of my red VW and walked
into my small ranch house.
"DADDYYYYY!" I heard. My little baby Halie came running
to me. I put down my jacket and breifcase and picked her up. A
piece of her brown hair tickled my nose and I set down my four year
old daughter.
"Where's your brother Hal?" I asked her looking at
her hazel eyes, she reminded me of someone. I couldn't put a
name on it though.
She smiled, "Hunters with mommy! He takin a bath."
I smiled and picked her up again. I brought her to the living room
where she was watching one of her television shows. The ones these
days where worse than when I was young.
"Outside?" she asked. I nodded, and put on her shoes.
When we went to the back yard she immediately started running to
the swings, then stopped dead in her tracks.
"Who's that, daddy?" She said pointing to the swings.
I looked up and I couldn't believe my eyes.
Sitting there on the swing set, was .. It was impossible .. but it
was Hailey.
She smiled, sort of a sad smile, "I see your daughter can see
me too. Hi Eli."
I was in shock. Halie looked confused and kept looking between me
and Hailey.
"Uhm, Hailey, can I talk to you for a minute?" She nodded
and I looked to my daughter, "Now go play with your swings,
okay?" She nodded and ran to them.
Hailey walked over, "You've definitely got something good
for yourself, Eli."
"I do," I said coldly. She left and I've been worried
sick, until I got myself to forget. Or almost forget.
"Don't be mad at me. If I stayed you'd never have
this. I'd always be haunting your mind. I'm, I'm glad I
left," She was lying. I could tell because she was speaking
too fast.
"I.. I'm not mad at you Hailey. I was worried sick. Hailey
I loved you."
She nodded, "Loved."
I realized the mistake I made, using past tense. "I have a
wife now. And two children Hailey. I can't change my life now.
I'm happy! It took me years to get over you! YEARS! And then I
met Allison."
"No, don't make excuses. It wasn't real, for you. It
couldn't be. I wasn't supposed to be alive." A tear
slid down her face.
"It was real! Hailey! It was real and I'm always going to
love you. Okay? But, I, I just, Halie, Hunter, Allison-" She
cut me off.
"Think what you want. Eli, I didn't show up to ruin your
life. I wanted to see you. I already saw Lynn. And, listen, I
don't want anything between you and your family to change. I
know your happy. And thats all I want in life. Bad word choicing.
Now lets go inside. I wanna see who you have for your wife."
She smiled. I nodded, and we got Halie and walked inside.
Allison was in the living room with Hunter, his wispy brown hair
was all wet from his bath. He was only one. When mem Halie, and
Hailey walked into the room Allison stood up and gave me a hug and
kissed my cheek. Hunter's green eyes went straight to Hailey.
They can both see her?
"How was work hon?" Allison asked. Her copper hair was in
a ponytail a few strands hanging in her face. Her brown eyes stared
into mine, full of love.
"Work was good. How was your day?" I kissed her on the
cheek, then looked at Hailey, and saw a tear run down her
cheek.
"It was alright," she answered.
"MOMMY! Don't be rude. Say hello and introduce yourself
to-," Halie stopped and looked at Hailey, "What's
you're name?"
Hailey smiled, "Hailey."
"Thats my name too!" She exclaimed obviously happy with
herself, "Mommy say hi to Hailey."
"Hello Hailey," Allison said, playing along with what she
thought was one of our daughter's little games.
I looked at my daughter standing next to Hailey, and realized they
looked exactly alike. They had the same hair, same eyes, and same
facial expressions.
"I'm going to run to the store and but what we need for
stuffed shells," She said, kissed me and
left.
Hailey's Point Of View
I wish I didn't come. This hurt
too much. I still loved Eli and this is why I left. So he could
have a good normal life. His children were absolutely adorable, and
I'm sure both could see me.
When Allison left I started talking, "I shouldn't have
come, I, I , I should go. I don't wanna-"
"Shut up," He cut me off laughing. He looked amazing. He
was muscular and still tan, his hair was cut cleaner now, but his
eyes still looked at me the same way. He grew up, and I still
looked like the thirteen year old girl I died as.
His kids' s attention was turned to the tv. "I'm
sorry," I said, and I kissed him. I had to go on my tippy
tippy toes to reach him, he grew so much. I loved every second of
it.
"I love-"
Eli's Point of View
She kissed me, and disappeared,
again.
