THE DIVIDED STATES OF AMERICA
20 years later
Brandi
I walk off of the plane, holding Jrs hand, and
Zaneys hand. She looks up at me, “Mommy,” she says,
“when do I get to meet uncle Zane?”
I smile down at my little seven year old, she looks so much like
Jr, though he argues that she looks more like me,
“Soon,” I say, then look up, “in fact, there he
is.” I point to a man tall man, very in shape, his eyes are
dark, but somehow bright. He’s holding a womens hand,
she’s beautiful, even for her age. “And that,” I
point to the women, “is aunt Char.”
I let go of Zaneys hand, and she runs into Zanes open
arms.
Zane
I scoop the little girl up into my arms.
I’ve never met her before, but I know who she is. She looks
like Jr, but when she smiles, she’s the spitting image of
Brandi.
“Uncle Zane!!!”
I laugh, “Hello, whats your name?” Brandi and Jr are
almost to us.
“Zaney.” She smiles like it’s the best thing in
the world.
“She’s named after you.” I look to see Brandi.
Her and Jr look exactly the same as 20 years ago, just more
aged.
I smile, “I’m honored.” I look at Zaney, and
think of the little girl that Char and I could have had, the one we
lost. I push that away. I pick up Zaney and lead everyone to the
car.
Because now, all the states are no longer divided, but united, just
like the five of us.
