I remember the day I met them. It’s as clear as the water on the beach, in the Bahamas. That’s because I met them in the Bahamas. I was there for a wedding. It was a very important wedding to the family. It was my parent’s renewal of their vows. I didn’t know what that was at the time, but I went along with it.

My name is Anna, and I was only 7 when this started. As you see I was the one in the middle. I was the in the middle for all the pictures, I was in the middle of all the fights, as I was in the middle of both their ages. Life while being in the middle all the time was tough!! Ha-ha!! Well, not ALL the time! I liked it I felt like I was always needed.

The first person I met from their family was Andrew. He looked so helpless. His mother had just given Abigal his float, to swim, and his goggles. He wasn’t able to swim, because the Lifeguard said that he was too defenseless against the waves at his age.

I walked over to him, as though I was going to get wet sand. But I stopped and I looked at him. I waved, and he smiled back. It made me feel special. After that I kept walking. When I came up, with little sand, because really didn’t need any, he walked up to me. I stared at him and smiled. He stared at me right back. I looked into his eyes and dreamt of chocolate. Hey! I was only 7, of course I could dream of chocolate. I slowly moved my lips to say “hi”, in my sweet 7-year-old voice, and he gave a wave

“Uhm… My name is Anna…” I whispered softly.

He said as though he was telling me a secret, “My name is… ugh… Andrew, and… that’s my sister, Abigal, over there.”

I kindly looked over to see her splashing and playing in the water with her parents. I felt bad for the poor kid! So I didn’t respond.

After a moment Adrew continued. “I bet you’re looking to play with her, it’s okay. I’m used to sitting alone…” He smiled, a painful smile. “I don’t mind…”

I replied with a smile. He stood there awkwardly swaying back, and forth. Then he asked me curiously, “How old are you?”

I smiled a bigger, and wider smile and replied proudly “I am now 7 and a half! I have been alive for a very long time my mama says!”

“Yes… ugh… I guess. Ha-ha. Longer than me at least.” He said as if he were ashamed.

“Oh really? How old might you be!?” I curiously asked.

He glanced at his toes as he scrunched them underneath the sand, and didn’t look up when he said “I am 6… my sister is 8” He looked up and looked into my eyes and said “I hate being younger than her. Maybe if I were older things would be different.” He looked back down.

I thought about what I was going to say. It was like I ran out of time when I heard my mama yell at me to come back.

“Anna! Have you gotten enough sand yet darling?” She yelled like she did when her and papa were not having a good day.

I yelled back “Mama! I’ll be right there! Can I bring Andrew to play?” I looked at Adrew to have him confirm that it was okay. He shrugged his shoulders “I guess it’s okay. My parents are busy with Abigal right now” I smiled and we both walked over to the blanket my mama was laying on. She always told me that she was letting the sun recharge her. Almost like she was a battery or something.

When we got to the blanket my mama leaned up and said hello to Andrew.

“Hello there lil’ youngin’. I’m guessing that you’re Andrew. The boy my lil’ Anna asked to come over.” She had a great big smile. Mama always left a great first impression. No matter what the situation was, people always remembered her as such a nice person.

We both nodded, and smiled. Then we walked a little bit farther away and sat down. We talked for quite a while. Until Adrew’s parents were wondering where he was. We talked about his sister. I thought that she looked mean. He insisted that she wasn’t. She just had this natural way of getting all of the attention. He also said that she invited him to play with her and his parents. She did for a while, but his parents told her that it was her special time with them, and suggested that she not invite him anymore. I liked Andrew he was a very nice person. He wasn’t mean at all.
