Ash, Arianna, and I sat there
for 12 hours. We stayed in these funky green seats. Arianna had
fallen asleep on Ash three hours ago. Her head on his chest, his
head on hers. They were holding hands, fast asleep.
I didn’t sleep. I was too
worried. I sat there, staring at the door.
Then, a tall nurse with short
spiky hair walked up to me. “The baby’s here,”
she said smiling. “A healthy girl.”
I leaned back, my heart
pounding. I almost cried in relief. The nurse motioned me to the
room. “Don’t you want to see your baby?”
I got up carefully. I walked
through the double doors, and down the hallway. The nurse pointed
to a door. Nervous, I walked through.
Hannah sat there in bed, her
hair pulled back. She held our baby in her arms, smiling down at
her. She looked up when she saw me. Her grin widened. I walked
over and sat down in the chair next to her.
“She’s
beautiful,” I whispered.
Hannah nodded. The baby
squirmed in her arms. Then she opened her eyes. My heart skipped
a beat. Hannah gasped. Staring at us were the brightest blue eyes
I have ever seen. Hannah sighed in delight. “She looks just
like you,” she whispered.
The baby wiggled, her hands in
fists. “Want to hold her?” Hannah asked.
I looked up. Hannah was biting
her lip, nervous. “No one else has held her yet,
so…” This was a big step for Hannah.
I tentatively reached out.
Hannah set the baby in my arms. I cradled the baby. She stared
into my eyes. She gurgled, reaching up to grab my ear. I
chuckled, my eyes welling in tears. “What are you going to
name her?”
Hannah leaned closer to me. She
smiled. “How about you decide.”
I almost started crying. She
wanted me to name the baby. I sat there for a moment, thinking.
“Kara,” I
whispered.
Hannah smiled, nodding. Her
eyes shined. “Such a pretty name. Kara. How
about…Kara Rose?”
Kara Rose squirmed in my arms.
Hannah placed her head on my shoulder, unaware of what she was
doing. For one moment, we were a happy family.
