Logan
I walked to the beach, the wind
whipping around my head. It was December now. I wrapped my
sweatshirt around tighter, trying to hide from the wind. I
wandered down the beach. And I ended up at the exact spot where
it happened. The beginning of the end.
The beer bottles were still
there scattered around from that night. Our footprints were still
there, barely. I sat down, trying to remember before that night.
What Hannah was like before the incident. How different things
would be.
As if calling her with my
thoughts, she appeared in front of me. She was about thirty feet
away, her feet in the water. She didn’t see me. She was
walking and looking out into the ocean. She was holding her
stomach, so I knew the baby was kicking around. The wind blew her
hair around. She stood there, at peace.
Then all of that ended. She
fell to her knees, crying out in pain. She was shaking, her hands
holding her stomach. I jumped up and ran to her as fast as I
could.
“Hannah?” I called.
“Hannah!” I reached her side. She was breathing
shallowly. “Hannah what’s wrong?”
She looked up, her eyes wild.
“I...I think...the baby’s coming,” she
whispered.
******************************************
I didn’t know what to
do.
I helped her into my car,
shutting the door behind me. She was scared. I was scared. I
tried to remember what I was supposed to do.
Once she was settled in the
car, I hopped in and started driving to the hospital. I took out
my cell phone and called Ari.
She answered on the first ring.
“Logan,” she whispered through clenched teeth.
“I’m in history. This better be important.”
“The baby’s
coming.”
Ari swore. I heard rustling in
the background. I could here the squeaking of the chair.
“Okay I’m on my
way,” she said loudly.
“Did you just walk out of
class?” I asked.
“Logan! Shut the hell up!
Focus,” she yelled.
Right. I looked over at Hannah.
She was breathing heavily, trying to ignore the pain. Her hair
stuck to her forehead. But she didn’t cry out. She looked
straight ahead.
“Tell her the
contractions are four minutes apart,” Hannah whispered. I
relayed the news to Ari. She told me she’d be there as soon
as possible. Then she hung up.
I drove faster. Suddenly,
Hannah grabbed my hand. “Stop,” she whispered.
“What?”
“Stop,” she said
again. I pulled over. “I’m not ready yet. Give me a
minute.” She leaned back, taking deep breaths. She
didn’t let go of my hand. After a few moments, she sat up
straighter. “Go ahead.”
I started driving again. She still held on to my hand.
:0 baby's coming!
