Chapter 12 (cont...)
Hannah

We walked out the doors together. With her by my side, I felt a lot braver. We walked into her car and I strapped myself in. Ari looked at me, as if waiting for me to start crying. But there were no tears. I was done crying.

She dropped me off. I hopped out, the wind whipping my face.

“Bye Hannah,” she said. She seemed to be smiling. But it was hard to tell theses days.

“Bye Ari,” I whispered. She had no idea how much she meant to me. I walked up the steps, and walked inside, about to do something else genuinely stupid. Stupid, but the right thing.

I walked up the steps, into my mom’s room. She was sitting there, reading her book. She looked so peaceful, and younger when she wasn’t worrying.

“Mom?” I whispered.

She looked up. “Hannah,” she said, smiling.

I walked over to her, and put my hand into hers. “I need to tell you something.”

She set her book down, her face aging with worry. “Are you okay?”

I took a deep breath. “I’m pregnant,” I choked.

She looked at me. A million emotions crossed her face. Worry, anger, sadness. She was quiet for a moment. I braced myself for the yelling, but it never came. She grabbed me into a giant hug. We stood there, rocking back and forth. She started to silently cry. I joined her. I realized she had done the same thing when she was about my age. She had me at 17.

She pulled away first, her eyes red. She gave me a shaky smile. “Well then sweetheart. Have you thought about what you are going to do?”

I shook my head sadly. “I couldn’t get an abortion. And, I don’t want strangers to take my baby.” I took a deep breath. “I want to keep my baby,” I whispered.

My mom gave me a small smile. She gave me another hug. “I’m too young to be a grandmother,” she said.

“You’re not mad?” I asked shocked.

She sighed. “I’m disappointed. And worried. But if you feel its right, then I know it is.”

This time I hugged her, hard. I realized this is the most I’ve hugged her in years.

“Come one,” she said, taking my hand. We have to talk about this more,”

We walked downstairs, mother and daughter.
