Always

September
12th, 1993. Today is our birthday. We are four years old, and the
best of friends. Our mothers have been best friends since they
were 12, and live next door to each other now, having never grown
apart.
We are
playing with blocks. He turns to me and says "Zandria, gimme
da green one!". Zandria is how he first said my name and it
has never changed to Alexandria. He doesn't say it rudely or
anything, but still I remind him. "Ace, you need to say
please!". I call him Ace.For some reason when I first
started talking, I couldn't say Casey.And since then he has
remained Ace. Zandria and Ace, the dynamic duo.
Today will be our joint birthday party, all of my friends are his
friends, and all of his friends are my friends. Ace and I are
joined at the hip. We never leave each others side.
We
are making a wish on the candles now. Everyone looks on as Ace
whispers in my ear, "Zandria, my wish was that you never
leave me" . I turned to him and whispered, "Ace, my
wish was that you never leave me". We smiled at
each other, and began tearing threw our gifts. Who knows what we
each got, because the truth is that our toys were evenly split
between his house and mine, and you never knew whose toy it was
when you picked it up.
That night
Ace and I were playing in my playroom, and our mom's were in
the kitchen talking very seriously. They insisted that we let
them be, which was unusual. Usually they played along with all of
our silly games of pretend and building blocks.
Later that night, after hours of Ace and I playing pretend,
they came in. "Casey," Auntie Lyssa as I called his
mother began. "We are moving." Ace was tearing up.
"Wait, don't cry yet baby" Auntie Lyssa said.
"I haven't told you where we are moving yet! You are going
to be living right in there," and she pointed to the empty
bedroom across the hall from mine. I shrieked and ran into Ace's
arms, "We will be right across from each other!"
I didn't understand this then, but they were moving into our
house because both of our mothers needed financial help. Our
fathers had ditched them both, and sharing our house was going to
save them both from debt. I still think now, that even if I had
understood, I wouldn't have cared because all that mattered
was that Ace was going to be just across the hall from me!
That
night, when bed time came around our new routine began. Ace and I
washed up in the upstairs and downstairs bathrooms respectively.
Then I went to my mom's room, and he went to his mom's room. My
mom would wish me goodnight and sweet dreams, and tell me "I
love you Alex". Only Ace is allowed to call me Zandria, it
is his pet name for me. Then I would walk to the hallway where
our rooms were and we would meet in the hallway. We would hug,
and then he would say, "Always remember and never forget Ace
loves Zandria". Then it was my turn, and I would say,
"Always remember and never forget Zandria loves Ace".
Then we would go our seperate ways to our rooms and fall
asleep.
