SECOND CHANCES
CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Jordan drove me home from school, since we were hanging out anyways. When we got to her house, Natalie, Jesse and George were already there. I didn’t know which one was which yet, but I assumed that the girl was Natalie.
“hey guys!” Jordan said through her rolled-down window, pulling into her driveway.
“heeey Jordan,” they all replied.
The two of us climbed out of the car, and Jordan started introducing. “so guys, this is Morgan, she’s new here. Not to the neighborhood, but to the school. So she doesn’t really know anybody..” she continued.
“Morgan, this is Natalie,” she said, pointing towards the girl. I had figured.
“and this is Jesse,” she motioned towards the guy holding a skateboard. I had seen him doing some tricks as we drove in, he was pretty good.
“and this is George,” she said, pointing towards a boy with dark brown hair and chocolatey brown eyes. He had tan skin, complete with a few freckles here and there. And, just about the cutest dimples I had ever seen.
“hi, guys,” I said, giving a warm smile.
They all greeted me back, and then Jesse went back to skateboarding, and George went back to trying to make him fall over. I sat on the curb, and Natalie came and sat next to me. Jordan went inside for something, I don’t really know what.
“so, I hear you’re friends with Colleen?” she said, not even looking at me.
“well, no, not really. I thought I was, but apparently she’s just using me. So I guess I’m not.” I explained.
“yeah, I know what you mean. The same thing happened to me,” she said, turning to me and tucking a strand of her dark brown hair behind her ear.
“you used to be friends with her?” I asked.
“well, I thought we were. She was just using me, just like she’s using you. She was using all of us at one point in time,” she told me.
“I see.. so why aren’t you anymore? Because she only liked you for your looks?”
“yeah, that, and also because she told everyone in school about my secret. That’s the kind of thing she does.” She said, looking down at her knees.
“what was your secret?” I asked, hoping she wouldn’t get offended.
“last year, I was anorexic and suicidal. I cut, and I never ate anything. I hated everything about myself. I got so close to going to the hospital because of it once, but I got better. I trusted Colleen enough to tell her about it, and then she turned on me and told everyone,” she said, reliving the experience.
“I’m sorry,” I told her. I’m glad that I had realized what Colleen was doing before she found out about my secret. That would have been a disaster.
“but it’s okay now. Because now I have these guys,” she said, smiling at the two boys who were practically tackling each other.
“but mostly Jesse..” Jordan said, popping up behind us.
“you’re dating Jesse?” I asked her.
“yeah. He was the only friend I had for a while after the whole Colleen thing happened. he’s like my best friend,” she smiled. I watched the two boys chase each other down the street. “they’re kind of best friends, too,” she added.
“yeah, I can tell,” I smiled.
I liked these people way better than Colleen and her pervy boyfriend.
This was going to be a good year – I could tell.
