It wasn’t always like this.
We didn’t always have to stress
Our parents were borrowing the world, you see
They were supposed to hand it down
With a big bow and shiny wrapping paper
Like a present on Christmas day
All we were was little children.
Naïve, locked away, playing with toys in faraway lands
I don’t know what happened
Suddenly all of the toys were packed away
Off to fight alone in a world that didn’t seem as real
As the ones we had come used to dwelling in
I don’t know what happened
Suddenly a wave of panic hit
And they asked us what we wanted to be when we grew up.
But it wasn’t that simple you see
They wouldn’t accept your dreams
Because to achieve they wouldn’t be easy
Forced to keep thinking ahead
I don’t know what happened
But most of us were forced to grow up too young
Watching as the horrors around us would merely appear
Watching as parents struggled for money to pay the bills
Watching as your friends swallow down bottles of pills
I don’t know what happened
But this place we dwell in
I am ashamed to call it the world
The places we dwelled in before
Seemed so much more real
